Make a Skin Exfoliant

These easy, home-made scrubs will create soft and glowing skin at a fraction of the cost of store-bought exfoliants.

Steps

Full-Body Sugar Scrub

  1. Pour one cup of white sugar into a large bowl.
  2. Pour 1/3 cup of fragrance-free liquid body soap into the bowl.
  3. Pour in 1/4 of Vitamin E, Baby Oil or Olive Oil for moisturization. As an added option, add a few drops of a fragrant oil (such as lavender or vanilla).
  4. Mix ingredients into a paste. Then wet skin in shower or bath and apply the home-made scrub to areas of body that you would like to exfoliate (such as legs, arms, elbows or knees).
  5. Either by using the palm of your hand or a small towel, gently rub exfoliant against skin in a circular motion. Rinse thoroughly then pat skin dry with towel.

Easy Baking Soda Scrub [1]

  1. Mix baking soda into your normal face wash or a small amount of water. Use enough of each ingredient to make a paste. This is mostly effective for smaller areas such as your face.
  2. Rub your new paste onto the area you'd like to exfoliate using small circular motions. Be careful not to rub too hard.
  3. Leave the paste on for 5-10 minutes, then gently rinse off.

Face-Freshening Sugar Scrub

  1. Gather your materials: 1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp honey, and a little lemon juice.
  2. Combine all ingredients and mix well. If the mixture seems too wet, add more sugar. The goal is to make a paste-like consistency.
  3. Apply gently in circular motions.
  4. Wash off immediately.
  5. In larger quantities, this can be used to exfoliate the rest of your body, too.

Oatmeal Scrub for Sensitive Skin

  1. Grind oatmeal with a food processor, blender, or cheap coffee grinder.
  2. Combine 1 tbsp of the ground oatmeal with 1/4 tsp salt and 1 tsp olive oil or water.
  3. Mix until the combination is the consistency of paste.
  4. Apply the paste gently in circular motions.
  5. Leave the paste on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

Tips

  • Applying moisturizer after exfoliation will leave skin even softer.
  • The third method may irritate sensitive skin! Be warned.
  • You can also use coffee in the mixture to get rid of cellulite.
  • Yogurt or raw unprocessed honey can also be used to mix your exfoliant, either instead of or in addition to water or olive oil. [1]

Warnings

  • If any of these mixtures irritate your skin, discontinue using that particular mixture.
