Add a Business to the Yelp Database

After you've started to write reviews on Yelp, you might come to a business that isn't listed in the database yet. In this case, you'll need to add a business. This article will tell you just how to do this heroic task, so take the initiative and add one!

Steps

  1. Visit the Yelp website in your web browser.
    • Once the page displays, there are many areas of the page, as well as several text fields to find your item.
  2. Login to Yelp, if you haven't done so already. To add a business, they want all members to login to their accounts so they have a name to go back and rely on and tell them what they did wrong should the business not need to be added.
  3. Search for the business through the business name and location. Towards the top of the page should be two text boxes. Fill in the business name in the top-left box and the location of the exact place. (i.e. If your business is located in Philadelphia, and the corporate location is in East Oshkosh, WI, type in Philadelphia, PA", or you may type in the exact zip code of this business. Try not to review corporate locations as locations in other cities. It's a one-to-one deal!
  4. Look through the list of search results found for your search terms in the location you wished to search. On the page that is displayed, you'll find your search suggestions for the business. If it's not found on this page of search results, you'll have to create a new business listing.
  5. Click the button marked "Add a Business" which can be found at the bottom of the search-results page. This button is mostly red with white lettering.
  6. Type the information for this specific business. If you need to, you may search for the business' web page from the web, or any missing information from the receipt. Yelp.com won't let you release the businesses without at least the name and address of the business.
    • For these new items to be searched for on the Yelp.com webpage, Yelp moderators will add this business, and will only be available after 48 hours.
    • You'll need to type the business' name into the Business Name box, their Address into Address (top box) and Address box (bottom, meant for suites), City/State/Zip into the box labeled "City, State, Zip", the business's telephone number into the phone number box, along with a website for the company.
      • Suites, apartments, departments as well as a more-specific address if contained inside another separate building, should be the only thing that goes in address box 2. Address box 2, should be, most of the time, not filled in.
      • Search on the web for a phone number, or look in the telephone book for an applicable phone number. Remember to type the area code of the listing. Although it's best to type with the parenthesis and hyphens, if you can't possibly do that, leave these symbols out and type the numbers only.
      • Find the official website of the company. They do not want other reviewing pages from Wikipedia, Facebook places, YP.com listing, etc., so leave these out of the websites. If none can be found, leave this line blank.
  7. Select a category that describes the business from the Yelp page's drop-down list for Categories they use.
  8. Write a review for the business. Fill out the box containing the ratings scale you would have used for the business, along with the review itself.
    • On this type of review, they don't give you the option to save your items as a draft, so you have to know exactly what you're going to put, when you create these places.
    • If you don't want to write a review at the present time, click the checkbox to the left of the "Write a review for this business " button on the page.
  9. Click the "Add Business" button to add this company.

Tips

  • If you've just added a business to their database, you won't be able to add Tips until after 48 hours (unless you bookmark the business from the PC page). If you bookmark the item from your PC page, you may add them before the item is fully posted to their searchable database. If you don't want to add a bookmark, you won't be able to add your Tip until after the 48 hour period has expired AND the business is fully searchable in their big database.
  • If more than 100 percent sure that the business is not listed in the Yelp database yet, you may add one directly by visiting www.yelp.com/writeareview/newbiz. This is the same place Yelp will send you, when you add other businesses listings to the database after thoroughly searching their already existing database listings.
  • Every action you try to take on Yelp (messaging, creating a review, etc.) has an "out" feature, in case you intentionally do NOT want to send the message (before actually sending/publishing the message. To cancel sending a review of this business that's just entered into the database, click the hyperlink (non-button) called "Cancel" near the "Send"/"Publish"/etc. button.
  • There are other things you can do on the business' locations page. You can wait for a later time (and write it later) after bookmarking, or you can label this bookmark as something to try and then review later. Either way, this is a good way to cross-reference this location at other dates.

Warnings

  • On occasion, you'll come across a business that is no longer in business (and are marked as "CLOSED" by Yelp moderators right on the top-level location page.) On this page, you'll find no other reviews. A major rule as a Yelp member, is not to re-review these closed businesses.
  • Never create other listings of businesses that already exist. It's very annoying when people find reviews on one real item (owned by a business owner), and another one that is an exact duplicate of the other. ALWAYS try to search for the business first.
  • Realize that each review is location-specific', and should not to be categorized for reviews based on the whole chain in general.
