Appreciate Heavy Metal

You might not be, or know someone who isn't into Metal, and want them to get into it, or to appreciate it yourself. These are some steps to get into it without becoming crazy, or upsetting others. Start out relatively easy; if you're into artists like Green Day, Good Charlotte, Mark Schultz, Third Day, Disciple, Skillet, or another rock group, then there are particular steps for you.

Steps

  1. Make some slight changes to the music you like, unless you are already pretty open. From here the next step to metal are groups like Megadeth, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and classic Black Sabbath. Remember to take it slow and easy, and really learn to appreciate and like the group.
  2. Try listening to progressive heavy metal that doesn't exclusively use the death growl as vocals, if you are into very flexible styles of music. Bands like Opeth can show you that both the soft and the brutal can be beautiful.
  3. Listen to some alternate forms of music, to get you into the groove, if you are into Beethoven and Mozart. You are in the most flexible state, so it should be easy. If you like these guys, then you should appreciate almost anything as long as it is well done. To get into the style, we would suggest old Metallica, Slayer, and old Anthrax. For getting into or used to the vocals, we would suggest Kreator, Death, and Venom. Stick mainly with old death metal or thrash metal for the beginning.
  4. Begin listening to groups with harder and more harsh vocals, if you are into Suffocation and Vile, this is definitely the best place to be in. For you, I would just suggest getting into groups that are harder and use more harsh vocals (growling/screaming). Just embrace the music and listen to it enough to get use to it and you will eventually enjoy it. As far as groups, I would suggest groups like Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, and Entombed.
  5. Listen to music closer to your original genre that is faster. Listen to more aggressive, but not hate filled, bands. You should also try to understand the lyrics and the mindset of the musicians so you can adopt it yourself, and so you can truly get into the music. Real music does not follow a verse chorus bridge verse chorus cycle. Metal uses a narrative style like classical music. The music progresses and evolves, almost as if it was telling a story. Listening to classical music will help the transition because you would get used to the narrative style.
  6. Listen to hard rock music. Hard Rock really works for getting into metal. However, if you're really not into it and seem not to be able to like it, you don't have to.
  7. Listen to in-game and whatnot rock radios, because they plan often metal songs that seem not to be it. As an example, V-Rock (GTAVC) plays Queen of the Reich. It doesn't sound like metal, but the second you read about it's metal, you just make it sound like metal!
  8. Listen to melodic metal songs. They are usually useful for getting into metal. They're melodic and catchy. Be aware that heavier genres can also be both, but in a singular way.
  9. Have patience and take your time. It might take years to learn to love metal, not only a couple of weeks. After all, music is all about enjoying to hear people using instruments and vocal chords in their way of doing it!

Tips

  • To really get into or just plain appreciate the growling and screaming, learn to do it yourself (plus it helps you judge whether a band is truly good or not); don't worry, most people do when they hear that suggestion, it actually is fun if you get someone you know who is good at teaching, and teaching that. It can also be something to laugh at, like learning opera.
  • Try to have variety in your metal.
  • You can still like other types of music besides metal.
  • Make sure to turn the volume up all the way for the best experience.
  • If you are a Christian and like metal, don't worry! Metal is not all about anti-religion and Satanism. Some good Christian metal bands include Mortification (death metal), Crimson Moonlight (black metal), Immortal Souls (melodic death metal), Crimson Thorn (death metal), Ceremonial Sacred (black metal).
  • There are many different types of Metal, but the main genres are:
    • New Wave Of British Heavy Metal(NWOBHM): Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Angel Witch
    • Thrash Metal: Slayer, Megadeth, Kreator, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax and Metallica.
    • Power Metal: Stratovarius, Edguy, Helloween, Iced Earth, Pantera (early) Blind Guardian, Hammerfall and Manowar.
    • Death Metal: Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Death and Suffocation.
    • Deathcore: Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, Bring Me The Horizon
    • Doom Metal: Katatonia, Moonspell and Candlemass.
    • Goth Metal: Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema
    • Progressive Metal: Symphony X, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Opeth, Devin Townsend, and Cynic.
    • Black Metal: Emperor, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Carpathian Forest, Burzum (early), Shade Empire and Anaal Nathrak.
    • Symphonic Metal: Therion, Nightwish, Epica and Grim Drowsiness.
    • Industrial Metal: Ministry, Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails
    • Melodic Death Metal (Gothenburg Sound): At The Gates, Arch Enemy, In Flames, DevilDriver and Callenish Circle.
    • Folk Metal: Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Svartsot and Bathory.
    • Glam Metal: Motley Crue, W.A.S.P, Black Veil Brides and Poison, LoveHate.
    • Sleaze Metal:L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat, Alleycat Scratch, Guns N Roses (early works), Dirty Penny, Crashdiet.
    • Groove Metal: Lamb of God and Pantera(later)
    • Nu Metal: Mudvayne, Soulfly, KoRn, Disturbed, Nonpoint, Linkin Park and Slipknot.
    • Metalcore: Killswitch Engage, Underoath, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine and The Devil Wears Prada
    • Mathcore: Blood Has Been Shed, Car Bomb, Protest The Hero, Converge and Training for Utopia.
    • Alternative Metal: System of A Down, Alice in Chains
    • And of course, the classics Black Sabbath, Deep purple, Aerosmith (early works) and Led Zeppelin.
    • Start small. Don't go from listening to pop to death metal. Start with alternative bands, like Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Twenty One Pilots. Then listen to bands that are a little heavier, like Nirvana and Blink-182. If you're ready to listen to heavier bands, then try bands like Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch.

Warnings

  • Be sure to be careful even at concerts, don't go into the mosh pit without experience or a friend, or both. Don't go without knowledge of how concerts work, and what to expect.
  • Metal today is often confused for "goth" and "emo".
  • Don't stereotype the music or people, because then you'll be led to believe that all metal and metalheads are the same.
  • The Metal scene is a crazy place, and should be probed from a distance before getting your foot in the water. Try "colder" and "colder" "water" before jumping into this "pool". It takes time, and doesn't require a "special" person to like metal.
  • The metal subculture and Gothic subculture are closely related and sometimes are often lumped together due to the mainstream and Goths who are new to the scene.
