Bake a Cake Inside a Hollowed Orange over a Campfire

Hankering for a blend of orange and chocolate only the real thing can satisfy? For your next dinner party or “just because,” bake delicate chocolate cakes inside a hollowed orange. The oils from the orange permeate the delectable chocolate cake and create a unique and savory treat your guests will talk about for weeks to come. Plus, this dessert is portable, allowing you to present this confectionery gift around a campfire or after a hike.

Steps

Prepare Orange

  1. Choose hearty, thick-skinned oranges. Some oranges, while delicious have thinner skins, which won’t work well for this recipe. Instead select something like a Navel Orange for this job. The fruit removes easily and the skin provides an ideal baking shell.
  2. Eat and hollow out oranges. This recipe is actually more than just a chocolate cake--you first have to eat the orange to create the cake “shell.” In order to preserve the orange’s structure, slice off the top of the orange and slide your knife around the insides in order to remove the orange fruit. Turn orange over to dispense the fruit and consume.
  3. Scrape any remaining fruit from the inside of the orange so you have a hollow shell. A small amount of remaining fruit is o.k. as it will bake into the cake batter.
  4. Clean and place orange shell on a rack. Make sure you gently wash the orange with cool water and then allow it to dry in a place that won’t compromise the shell.

Start Campfire and Assemble Supplies

  1. Create a campfire that will allow you to set the orange nearby. This means you may want to ensure any ant piles or excessive dirt is cleared away (or choose an area free of pests and dirt).
  2. Grab a large bowl and spoons or whisk. You’ll need something to mix the cake batter inside or you could prepare the batter ahead of time and keep it in a cooler until you make your cake.
  3. Pick up chocolate (or your favorite flavor) cake batter. Consider choosing a cake batter that requires the least amount of added ingredients. The best case would be to choose one that only requires that you mix with water and/or oil. Read instructions on batter to ensure you have any added ingredients (like eggs, butter, etc.).
    • Consider preparing batter ahead of time and maintain in a large Tupperware pitcher inside a cooler until its time to bake.
  4. Grab aluminum foil. You will need enough foil to wrap each orange. Purchase heavy duty foil too since you will be essentially placing your oranges on the ground.

Make Your Cake

  1. Pour cake batter inside hollowed orange. Only fill the orange approximately three-quarters of the way.
  2. Add orange top and wrap inside aluminum foil. Take care not to crush or squeeze the orange when wrapping it. Be sure you completely cover the orange with foil.
  3. Rest the orange inside your campfire, but in an area clear from direct flame. You don’t want to scorch your cake so choosing the right spot is imperative. Consider laying down a sheet of aluminum foil on the ground before placing your orange on top.
  4. Cook the orange for approximately half an hour. You may want to check the orange after it cooks for 15 minutes to ensure it isn’t cooking too quickly or too slowly.

Tips

  • Allow the orange to cool for several minutes before removing the aluminum foil in order to avoid getting steam burn.
  • Don’t forget to provide plastic forks for everyone so they can eat their cake.
  • Consider bringing toppings such as hot fudge, ice cream, sprinkles and dark chocolate pieces.
