Be a Metal Chick

Metal is a genre that is almost entirely dominated by men. However, that doesn't mean that you can't find your own place in the community and enjoy the genre.

Steps

  1. Listen to metal music. Some bands are: Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio and Dokken. Black Metal would be Gorgoroth, Marduk, Satyricon, Mayhem, etc. Melodic, Folk, or Power Metal bands you might like would be Eluveitie, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Helloween, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Amon Amarth or God Dethroned. Recommendations for heavy or brutal bands are Death, Nile, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Devourment or Skinless. Go to their concerts! Don't waste your money on the ones you don't like though because you will seem like a poser.
  2. Get a haircut that suits you. Most metalheads' hair is red, blonde or black. You can tease it as long as you don't look like the 'scene kid', but a mullet type hairstyle, which is a quite old style from the 80s, is good. Most metal chicks have long hair! So grow out your hair or have corn rows.
  3. Get some clothes, leather pants and jackets, ripped shirts (but not too crappy) and band shirts! Your shoes can be heeled boots, platform heels, and flats (depends on the style of your flats).
  4. Make some metal friends. Look for people wearing t-shirts of bands you like, or hang out in areas where people listen to metal. Start hanging out with the people you might have thought were weird when you were younger that listened to the hard rock music like Bon Jovi or Motley Crue.
  5. Always be yourself. Find your own personal metal style. You should know your stuff, and which music you like in metal depends on you. Don't feel the need to listen to certain bands or dress a certain way in order to be cool; focus on what you personally like.
    • Be cautious about people who dismiss you as "fake." It's okay to be new to metal, and to still be exploring what you enjoy. It's also okay to like different things from what most metalheads like.
  6. Try making your own music. Get an instrument like a guitar or drum or use your voice. If you are a better singer than an instrument player, do that. Guitars can vary like bass, and electric, you could get a cool design if you have the money for a wicked awesome one. And for drums, just make sure it isn't a kid drum set.
    • Only some metalheads are musicians; it's okay if you appreciate music without making your own.
  7. Try starting a band. Get your friends who know how to play instruments or sing. Guitar, drum, and piano are the staples of metal bands. Listen to metal for inspiration, and come up with unique sounds and lyrics.

Tips

  • Don't be afraid to own up to loving metal music, even if you think that others will think badly of you. You could be a heavily religious girl, but liking metal does not make you 'bad'. Enjoy it, weave it into your life, but don't be ashamed.and always be dedicated to the metal scene and let nobody talk you down!!.
  • Get a very large music library. Some people aren't going to believe you that you listen to a lot of metal, and it's helpful to know a lot of music. Check out every genre, even if you think you won't like it.
  • Don't feel the need to conform to a certain look. It's ultimately the music not the face of it.
  • Metal is not about APPEARANCE. It is about the appreciation of the music, whatever genre it is that appeals to you.
  • At concerts, be aware that dancing and movement can cause clothing to move where it wasn't intended to go. Be cautious about wearing revealing clothing, low cut shirts, short skirts (without tights or leggings) or anything that could turn into an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. Try tighter or more modest clothes so you can focus on enjoying the music instead of worrying about whether your clothes are in place.
  • Be aware that some traditionalists view nu-metal, Metalcore, and Deathcore as not being metal. Don't expect people to think of you as a metal head if all you listen to is nu-metal, Metalcore, and/or Deathcore. You should also be prepared to be called a poser, particularly by Death Metal fans, if you listen to Gothic Metal.
  • Keep in mind that unless it's a Gothic Metal band, most of the audience will be male.

Warnings

  • At concerts, particularly in mosh pits, there may be people who want to cop a feel. If someone awkwardly stands near you and you feel uncomfortable, stand on the other side of some big guy. If someone gets close to you or feels you up, just yell at him. Chances are that he'll get beaten up immediately. Metal is a community, and if you're being harassed, you can count on people to stick up for you.
  • Be aware that some metal lyrics can be very misogynistic. This is more common in Death Metal, Grindcore, Goregrind, and especially pornogrind lyrical content. It's okay to not like a song if you can't tolerate its lyrics, and it's also okay to like a song while acknowledging that parts of it are problematic.
  • Some people will be surprised that you listen to metal. It will seem even weirder if those people have a different picture of who you are in their heads, such as the good girl, the religious girl, the smart girl, etc. and then learn that you're into metal. It's up to you to decide how much you want to share this side of you.
