Be an Opinions Editor
This wikiHow will teach you how to be an opinions editor.
Steps
- Attend pitches. Pitches are when members of the staff give an idea of an article to write about. If accepted someone would usually write it. This meeting is important as you need to know what kind of articles are allowed and what they constitute. You may also need an article as editors need 1 article to write.
- Decide what goes on page with your co-editor. You usually have an array of articles to choose from so it might be difficult picking articles that connect to the school or community. You also have to know what the editorial is as it is the most important article on page. Editorials are articles that the entire staff agrees on and is a major problem that needs to be fixed. Opinion articles are made to shed light of situations that aren't seen a lot.
- Columns on the other hand, are about staff members. They would write something that matters to them or something that changed them. There is also the bullring, which are responses from the students of the school that give their opinion on one of the topics on page.
- Wait until about one or two weeks. Wait for everyone to get their final drafts done and have cartoons drawn for them. During this time other page editors would be working on page layouts. Not you though because with the limited space taken up by the columns, there is no room for change. So you would just send people to get bullring responses and check up on articles.
- Prioritize editing articles that go on page. You would get a copy editor to go through page articles until it comes to you. By this time it is also deadlines week where page editors are forced to go after school in the newsroom to work on page. If you are unable to finish the page, you go to deadlines until it is done.
- Manage your deadlines. The first few days at deadlines we usually just work on editing articles over and over again
- Print editions on white paper. Use them as a print draft which you would edit on incase of any mistakes. You keep doing this into content, titles, cartoons, bullring responses, and any last errors are finalized on the final day. Then print they which is usually on a Wednesday.
- Open the apple computer pressing the power button. Then go to research and type in the password on the Matador bible paper to ope Indesign. Then at the top of the screen you would see a GO tab which you would then click and press connect to server. You will be greeted with a loading bar, then you will see a file pop up that says newspaper files. Click on it and then you will see a lot of random files but look for a file called issue.
- Depending on what issue you are on, click opinions and boom. You can see your page once you click on either page 4 or 5 which are your pages on the newspaper. A layout should already pop up for you so you would just copy and paste articles into it. If there’s something you don’t know about, use Google to help.
