Become a Hippie Chick

Think of your style. Preppy? Nah. Goth? Nope. Geeky? Uh-uh. Hey, maybe you're a hippie! Picture the typical stereotype of a hippie in your head. Flowing skirts, gold and wooden jewelry, indie music...If that appeals to you, read on!

Steps

  1. Stop right now and go look at yourself in a mirror. What do you see? Tons of makeup? Hair that's gooped up with products? Miniskirts and high heels? How different do you want to look? It all depends on whether you want to go completely hippie-dippy, or just add a bit of boho glam to your usual style.
  2. Starting a little at a time, slowly go more natural. Changing your eyeliner from heavy black to a little bit of sapphire or emerald can brighten up your whole face and make you look fresher and more wholesome, which is key to the hippie look.
  3. Leave your hair alone. If you have wavy or curly hair and you straighten it every morning, STOP! Not only is it bad for your hair, straightening will destroy the image that you are free spirited and carefree. Instead, you will look like a Barbie. Leave it down or loosely pulled back.
  4. Ditch the tight jeans and pull on a long skirt; you will notice the difference right away in how much more comfortable you are and how much freer you feel. If you only want to change a bit, try dark wash skinny jeans and a long, flowing shirt in an earth tone. Jewel tones look good on everyone.
  5. Stop wasting water and energy; hippies are concerned about the environment as well as global warming. If you are one of those people that thinks global warming is a myth, you are probably not hippie material.
  6. Be nice to animals; no, giving your pet mini Chihuahua a manicure does not count. Go vegetarian, or even better, vegan. Make sure to do so healthily and do your research beforehand!
  7. Try listening to music that's not on the local Top 40 stations; instead, look for stuff on the Internet on sites such as Rhapsody, Amie Street, and last.fm. Nineties rock also isn't bad; listen to 311, Nirvana, and Stroke Nine to see if you like it.

Tips

  • Don't go righteous around your friends and family if they aren't as alternative and indie-cool as you. You wouldn't want people making fun of your music if it's eccentric, so don't make fun of your sister or best friend just because they like Britney Spears. Nobody likes a jerk.
  • Don't change your look 180 overnight, because
    • you won't reflect yourself
    • people will know you are a poser. Don't be a poser, they're morons. Act and dress in accordance to your own personality.

Warnings

  • Your friends might think you're ditching them along with your old style.

Things You'll Need

  • Long necklaces
  • Clothing in jewel and earth tones
  • Jewelry that looks Asian or Middle Eastern. Indian jewelry is beautiful and fits perfectly with the image you are trying to create.
