Become a Singer Even if Your Parents Don't Want You to

If your parents want you to grow up and do something more "practical" than singing for a living, read this article for foolproof success regardless of your singing ability or personal circumstances.

Steps

  1. Make sure you practice singing as much as you can every day, even if this is in your bedroom or even in the bath / shower.
  2. Watch your favorite singers sing live - listen to their voice and try to hit the same notes. This is good for your voice, but if anything hurts or strains, stop.
  3. Enter karaoke and other singing competitions.
  4. Don't tell them you want to be a singer if you think they won't encourage you. However, if they bring it up in a conversation, be honest and tell them why. They should understand. If not, don't give up! Many singers started very basic and without much encouragement / success.
  5. Talk to your parents about having vocal lessons just for fun. Say this won't affect your schoolwork and you will do better academically. If they don't let you have vocal lessons, persuade one of your friends who is taking vocal lessons into helping you out with some of the stuff they learn there.
  6. Find someone who is musical or can sing. If so, get chatting and singing as soon as possible.
  7. Remember, the younger you are, the better chance you have at improving your voice, and you have more time to try to get better.
  8. Write your own songs! It promotes you as a singer and helps you express yourself.
  9. Try to create your own voice.
  10. Ask your friend how you sound and if you don't think you can then go on the computer and download Audacity, record your voice and listen to yourself on there.

Tips

  • Don't ever give up
  • Remember to always believe in your self because if you don't you could get worse and won't make it.
  • Don't let someone say you can't.
  • Try not to strain your throat or vocal chords.
  • Remember to practice at least once a day to help you become better at singing. Remember, practice makes perfect.
  • If someone offers you a record deal, don't take it right away. Make sure you know that person and record label.
  • Try to sing in front of the mirror
  • Never claim to sing better than another person.
  • Your parents may feel better about your singing career if they know that you have a back-up plan. One of the main reasons that they may not approve of a singing career is that they're worried about your financial situation. If you can't get a gigs for a two-month period, chances are that your money situation will be really tight. Having a back-up plan may help reassure your parents that you won't starve in tough times. For example, if you can play the piano or organ, you can easily get a job in a church or other place of worship. A job as a church musician can easily take care of at least half of your income, maybe more.
  • Take some of what your parents say in mind; they have a reason why they don't want you to do something, but if it's what you want, don't give up.
  • Never be afraid, if you mess up on a note, then go back and try again. Do you have stage fright? Picture the crowd in their underwear and have a smile!
  • Practice in front of crowds.
  • They may be very worried about you, with good reason. Many people have been chewed up by the music scene. Always tell them what you're doing, make sure to be trustworthy. They're more likely to let a kid who gets home on time and gets good grades to be a singer than a kid who has a C average grade and is never home!
  • Investing in lessons and books on vocal technique can really help save your voice. You may be able to sing as high as a soprano but if you do it incorrectly, you may damage your voice.
  • Don't rely on being a singer as a career... have a back-up plan in case your singing career doesn't work!
  • Know your limits, especially if you are going to play in a band! If you feel like your out of breath, don't be afraid to cut the note short, many songs will still sound great if you do. If you have a band member who can sing pretty well, have a gesture planned, so he can pick it up, if you do have to cut the note.
  • Don't be too upset if you don't become a famous singer... maybe you will find something else that you love and enjoy!
  • Ask your friends whether becoming a singer will suit you.
  • Don't be discouraged if your parents are not allowing you. Show them that you can do it.
  • Most celebrity singers started from the bottom, such as busking or performing on YouTube. Don't aim too high straight away, get some experience before working your way up the ladder.
