Become an Anthrozoologist

An anthrozoologist studies the relationships and interactions between human and animal species, as well as specific studies of animal species and behavior. An interdisciplinary field, it draws together numerous areas such as anthropology, medicine, psychology, veterinary medicine, ethology, and zoology. Currently, a large part of the research undertaken is focusing on quantifying the positive outcomes of human and animal relationships.[1] If you're keen on animals and have an interest in one or more of the fields feeding into this area, it might just be a place for you to carve out an interesting and useful career.

Steps

Getting qualified in the field

  1. Know what anthrozoology is. Anthrozoology is the study of animal species, animal behavior, and human-animal relationships.
  2. Get properly educated. To become an anthrozoologist, you first need a degree. Choose a degree in such areas as anthropology, medicine, psychology, veterinary medicine, ethology, and zoology. Move onto a masters in anthrozoology.
    • Go online and search for universities that offer master's degrees for anthrozoology. Some of the possible universities include the University of Windsor or the University of Exeter.
  3. Take several animal behavior courses. It is also a good idea to do courses in human behavior as well.

Specializing

  1. Pick your specialty. For example, if you have a love for cats, you can specialize in cats.
  2. Research your animal. Study the animal you're specializing in. For example, If your specializing in hamsters, study the behavior, anatomy, and the variety of breeds.
  3. Start a career in animal behavior or anthrozoological work.
