Blowout and Straighten Kinky Curly Natural Hair
Trying to go from a Foxy Brown fro to Pocahontas Straight when your hair is naturally kinky-curly without the aid of your neighborhood stylist can seem like a daunting task; however with these steps however and a little bit of patience, all naturally girls should be able to get silky strands with ease.
Steps
- Gather all your necessary equipment and supplies and have everything handy. The specific product that you use with be contingent upon what you like, what’s in your hair care arsenal and your hair philosophy.
- Properly shampoo and condition your hair. It is important to first make sure the hair is thoroughly clean as you never want to flat iron dirty hair. Next follow up with a conditioner or if you have time use your favorite deep conditioner and a hood dryer for added protection against the drying affects of heat and it will also be easier to blow dry the hair if it is properly hydrated.
- Use a wide tooth comb and a spray leave in conditioner to detangle the hair. Section the hair into 4 to 6 sections using the hair clamps.
- Once the hair is sectioned begin with one area at a time and apply the hair balm and/or serum. You can use a silicone based serum for my shine if you do not have an issue with serums.
- Blow-dry the hair one section at a time with a paddle brush starting at the ends and going back from the roots to the ends. Take your time and dry the hair in a downward motion as this will ensure the hair gets straighter and makes for a more complete finish.
- Once the entire head is completely dry. Resection the hair using horizontal partings. You will begin smoothing the hair at the base of nape.
- Using a ceramic flat iron starting at the nape of the neck gauge how high your temperatures needs to be increased to by starting at around 250 degrees and progressively working your way up. Try to use the lowest temperature setting.
- Use 1/8th inch thin partings with the rat tail comb and smooth the hair with smooth even tension with the flat iron. If done properly you should not normally have to redo the hair.
- After your hair is completely smooth, you can use a small amount of serum or natural hair oils for shine and to control flyaways. Shake and flaunt your new Pocahontas straight look and in about a week, shampoo and resume the Foxy Brown Fro.
Tips
- Small partings are essential.
- Use a conditioning shampoo or conditioning rinse if your prefer, however make sure the hair is clean and residue free.
- Take your time and blow dry using downward motions for a smoother look and reduced heat will be necessary when blow drying the hair.
- A good professional flat iron or the fan favorite CHI is recommend.
