Buff Your Nails

A simple and inexpensive way to create cute, shiny nails.

Steps

  1. Purchase a nail buffer at your local store that you trust. This will look either like an emery board with a few different colored panels, or it will be a foam block with different textures on the sides. Some buffers have step one to 4 written on them to help.
  2. File your nails as you normally would, rounded, square or oval look best.
  3. Starting with the roughest grit side of the buffer, begin to buff your nails with a gentle, side-to-side motion. At first, just aim to smooth out major ridges.
  4. Move to the next roughest setting, and repeat with gentle side to side motion, again working to smooth out the nail.
  5. Repeat with the third side of the buffer .
  6. With the last (smoothest) part of the buffer, this is where you really get to work, polishing your nails until they look like you just put on clear nail polish.
  7. Finished.

Tips

  • Use a good quality cuticle balm or oil after applying.
  • Make sure to file your nails before as well!
  • Use cuticle oil after.

Warnings

  • Buffing the nail is fine occasionally - for example when a special occasion arises - but regular buffing can dry out the nail causing breakage and splitting. It can also thin the nail making it weaker and minimizing growth.
  • The side with the roughest grit may be a file for the edges. If so, never use on the actual face of the nail.
  • Don't work too hard with the rougher grit, it is simply to smooth out major lines and bumps on the nail.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 nail buffer from local supermarket, drugstore, health dept. of large store
  • 1 regular emery board
