Build Up Your Speed As a Pace Bowler in Cricket

Do you want to become a fast and accurate pace bowler? There's a bit of work to be done. But don't be scared, it's not hard, it's just that it requires lots of practice.

Steps

  1. Start off by continuously bowling at a certain fast speed and if it is varying, let it be but not as much as that of slower balls. Try to bowl as fast as you can in front of stumps, don't care about wides.
  2. Even in the Fast Bowler's Bible, he says that with bowling fast, accuracy comes fast.
  3. Bowl fast and then with that speed try to get the accuracy.
  4. Pull your bowling arm down a bit harder. When you are confident and comfortable, make sure you gradually adjust this so that you don't completely lose your accuracy.
  5. The faster you run the ball goes faster. Get a good follow through as well.

Tips

  • When you're releasing the ball, flick your wrist downwards to add extra momentum into the ball, making it go faster.
  • Use your run up to your advantage. The faster you run, the faster the ball will go. So, if you're running up, don't slow down at all until the cricket ball has actually left your hand. Some kids have a huge run-up and slow down as they're about to bowl it. That's what you DON'T want to do.
  • To make the ball go faster, when you put your arm up that doesn't have a ball in it, and you're about to bowl the ball, pull down hard with your 'off' arm. This will make your bowling arm come down faster, thus making the ball go faster.
  • As you are on your bowling action, pull your body weight backward and at the time of release, use that body power to bowl faster.
  • You can try exercises like swimming to improve bowling fast. You require a lot of stamina and need to move your hands faster so this is something that will help.
  • When you hold the ball, either if you hold it down the seam or to the side a bit, hold it closer to the tips of your fingers rather than the palm of your hand.
  • Run in fast with control, make a good jump as this can give you time to pull your left arm down hard if you are a right arm bowler, or the other way round for a left arm bowler. But don't jump too high or too low as it will reduce your momentum.

Warnings

  • To prevent pulling muscles do some stretches before bowling.
  • Don't try to bowl too fast. You can pull muscles in your arm which can make it so that you won't be able to bowl for a while without feeling some bad pain in your arm.
  • Work up your speed gradually, this will make bowling fast seem more natural to you instead of feeling like you're forcing it to happen.
