Care for Synthetic Hair

In some ways, caring for synthetic hair is a lot like caring for real hair. You should wash it with shampoo and conditioner and brush it to keep it looking shiny and pretty. However, you should avoid blow drying it and you should only straighten it if the package says that this can be done. With the right care, no one will be able to tell that your synthetic hair isn't real.

Steps

  1. When washing, you should always use shampoo that is very light and easy on your hair. Try Dove or baby shampoo. Wash with lukewarm to cold water.
  2. Use a conditioner that is very oily, like a deep conditioning treatment (avocado or almond). Rinse off 90% but leave just a little in, to prevent tangling.
  3. Do not blow dry, this will cause a lot of useless tangles that will ruin your extensions. Wrap them up in a towel, and let them sit dry without interfering.
  4. After dry, take a large bristle brush and brush out any knots in them. Then you can proceed to add any hair conditioner or leave in treatment and detangler.
  5. You can straighten if they came in a package that said "like human hair" but you should only straighten on a low temperature setting, as this may melt the hair.

Tips

  • Synthetic hair is a lot of work, you must have the time and dedication.
  • You may want to consider carrying around a comb and small bottle of detangler, as throughout the day, you may run into problems with tangles.
  • You are unable to dye or color synthetic hair extensions, so make sure they are close to your hair color.
  • Clip in extensions are the best for your hair, as the glue in or braid in ones leave a lot of damage behind. Note that if you do use clip in extensions do not sleep with them in, they may cause bald spots.
  • Putting your hair up will cause your extensions to have a bend in it.

Warnings

  • Only use glue if you are absolutely 100% sure you know how to take care of it, because the glue leaves a lot of residue behind which is impossible to take out.
  • Always keep your extensions if not being used somewhere safe, so they do not tangle or change texture.
  • Synthetic hair usually feels like a Barbie's hair, so think twice before going cheap. Real hair is much easier to manage.
