Change the ABS Harness for a Cavalier

If you own a Chevrolet Cavalier, there might come a time for you to replace the ABS harness on the driver side. The original harness is of good quality but could be too tight. This would, over time, lead to the connectors getting bad. This would lead to the ABS light coming on.

Steps

  1. Get an ABS harness. This is what you want - the Dorman 970-007 Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness.
  2. Loosen the wheel on the driver's side. (Just loosen the lug nuts. There is no need to removed the nuts now.
  3. Jack up the car.
  4. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
  5. Place the removed wheel under the car side. This ensures that the car does not fall tot he ground if (when) the jack fails. Very helpful when you are under the car. If you have jack stands, you'd definitely want to use them.
  6. Trace the ABS wire from behind the brake rotor. This is a little plug which goes into the unit that sits outside the toothed wheel.
  7. From under the radiator, look up and you can see the wire going up to the computer. This is a good place to splice the harness.
  8. Replace the harness with the new harness. Ensure the is enough play in the wire. Do a dry run with the wheel off. Turn the wheel from side to side and check that the wire not too tight. You'd have to turn on the car for this (else wheel would be too tight to turn).
  9. Put the wheel back and go for a test drive.

Tips

  • Use jack stands.
  • Splice far enough, but ensure the new harness has enough length.
