Choose a Dictionary to Use on an Amazon Kindle Keyboard

Have you ever tried to read a book on an Amazon Kindle handheld device before, but when you got to a word you didn't understand, you decided to dig out a real-live dictionary? You probably did. Fear not! The Amazon Kindle device has two dictionaries installed on its device by default. This article will tell you how to choose a dictionary for your device, so you don't have to carry around that bulky real dictionary, every time you read your eBook on your Amazon Kindle device.

Steps

  1. Slide and release the power switch at the bottom of the device, to power-on the Amazon Kindle device.
  2. Press the Home button on your Kindle device.
    • Do not worry, you won't lose your place in the book. Upon exiting back out to the Home screen, your device quickly syncs to the last page read, as you turn it's pages.
  3. Press the "Menu" button.
  4. Use the 5-way toggle switch to navigate to choose the "Settings" option, from the menu that will come up to the right of the screen.
  5. Press the "Menu" button once again. This will display some newer options.
  6. Use the 5-way toggle switch again, to navigate your device to the option that says "Change Primary Dictionary."
  7. Touch the center button in the center of the 5-way toggle switch.
  8. Use the 5-way toggle switch to choose another dictionary.
  9. Touch the center button in the center of the 5-way toggle switch.

Tips

  • Dictionaries bought by another Kindle device, will always be installed in your archived books folders. It is suggested that you turn on your Wi-Fi on the device (if the device is 3G-compatible), as the download files are quite large and will take long amounts of time to download over the 3G network.
    • Be sure you are in an area that has Wi-Fi service.
  • The two dictionaries that are installed on your device upon first load are "The New Oxford American Dictionary" and the "Oxford Dictionary of English". You might have to install them by opening up your Archived folders of books and installing them one-by-one.
  • Amazon Kindle devices have two dictionaries installed (but not loaded into the device) by default. You may buy others in the Amazon Digital Store and send them to your device. However, you will not be allowed to hide these dictionaries once they are installed to your Home Screen. And one of these dictionaries must be on your Home Screen at all times.

Warnings

  • Although the iPhone/iPod touch and PC version allow you to set your dictionary at first start up or first attempted to use, there is no way to set these versions to use another dictionary besides the one you set at first setting, once the setting is in place.
