Clean Rubber and Leather Shoes

Nasty grass and mud stains all over your shoes? Forget the soap, and use toothpaste. Sounds crazy but it totally works and makes them look new again.

Steps

  1. Remove the laces and wash off excess dirt.
  2. Create a 1 part bleach and 1 part water mixture and soak the laces in it for about 10 minutes.
  3. While soaking them take some toothpaste (most brands work fine) and put it on the toothbrush or nailbrush. Nail brush works better because the bristles are stiffer.
  4. Wet the shoes with water a bit then scrub, with leather scrub gently because scrubbing them hard can damage them.
  5. Repeat if you missed some spots, then wash off the toothpaste.
  6. Take the laces out of the bleach soak and wash then wring them.
  7. Hang your shoes and laces out to dry.

Tips

  • You can use a soft bristle toothbrush on leather.
  • A nailbrush works best on rubber because it is stiffer.
  • When drying, lay them out in the sun to dry fast.

Warnings

  • Do not think adding more bleach will clean them faster, it breaks the laces.
  • Do not use this method of cleaning on suede or soft leather shoes.
  • Wear rubber gloves when handling bleach
