Come Up with a Good Band Name

Have you been thinking for weeks of a band name, and still haven't had even a shred of a good idea? With these tips, you can easily find a band name that's original and amazing.

Steps

Group brainstorm

  1. Brainstorm. A band usually has more than one person. Ask for others' input. You don't even have to limit your ideas to what the band comes up with. Get everyone involved!
  2. Find some phrases or words that could work in a name. Or, take a phrase and replace a word or two to make it sound catchy. A good place to find ideas would be to go to Wikipedia and click "Random Article." Also, maybe look around your room. You could probably find some good ideas on random labels there.
  3. Now that you have some ideas for a name, try to find ones that match your Develop Your Own Style of Music. For example, you wouldn't be in a folk band named "Feast Of Blood," would you?
  4. Once you have your choices narrowed down, ask the other band members what they think of it, a unanimous agreement for a name is best.
  5. Google or Wikipedia your chosen name to see if there is a band named that or close to it, you don't want to get in some kind of lawsuit.

Blending names of the band members

  1. Put your names together. If you have at least three people in your band, its good to mix their first names.
  2. Consider first how long do you want the band name to be. This will influence how much of your names you choose to use.
  3. Make the name.
    • If you have three people in your band, have at least a 6 letter name so there are 2 letters for each person.
    • If the names of your band are ___, ___, ___, (for example, Tom, Dick and Harry), take the first 2 letters of Tom, To, the second 2 letters of Dick, ic, and the last 2 letters of Harry, ry, and add them together. As Toicry doesn't sound right, change it slightly yo Tockry.
  4. Add a word that starts with the same letter as your name. If that doesn't sound good, add "The" to the start. For example, The Tockry Tools.

Tips

  • It's probably not a good idea to broadcast your band name around before you actually have your band off the ground. If your name is really good, someone could very well use it as their own.
  • Keep a small notebook with you while thinking of a band name, you never know when an idea might pop into your head!
  • Try saying your band name ideas aloud to see how they sound, it will help make your decisions earlier.
  • Make sure it's original and make it creative.

Also

  • Make sure your name reflects your style heavily. Long band names are from the 60s/70s usually (Diana Ross & The Supremes, Dick Dale and the Del-Tones), so long names are even harder to come up with. It's probably a bad idea to have it overly sexual and/or explicit as well (at least with most people it is, their parents will blow a fuse).
