Connect to the Internet Wirelessly in Windows 7

This guide shows how to connect your Windows 7 PC to a wireless network.

Steps

  1. Turn on your computer and the router you want to connect to.
  2. Find the network information. In order to sign onto the network, you'll need to know the network's name and the password, if there is a password.
  3. Make sure that the router is in range. If you're out of range of the router, you'll either have a poor connection, or you just won't be able to connect at all.
  4. Look for the Wi-Fi icon in the toolbar. The icon will be five bars with a yellow star over it, and is located on the right-hand side of the toolbar.
  5. Click on the Wi-Fi icon. This will pull up the menu.
  6. Select the name of the network you want to connect to.
  7. Click Connect.
  8. Wait to be prompted for a password. Once you're prompted for the security password, type it in, ensuring that it's case sensitive.
  9. Watch the icon change to show your signal strength. You should now be connected to the Wi-Fi.

Tips

  • If your router doesn't show, try restarting your computer and/or the router.
  • Some old computers can't connect wirelessly to the internet. In this case, you may have to hook the computer up via ethernet instead.

Things You'll Need

  • A computer or laptop with WiFi
  • A wireless network to connect to in range
  • (If needed) a password to connect to the network
