Construct a Color Wheel

This article will teach you how to make a full 12 color wheel with only 3 transparent primary colors, yellow, magenta and cyan. This is wikiHow to construct a color wheel. For information on how to use a color wheel, visit Use-the-Real-Color-Wheel.

Steps

1. Make a circle and divide it into 12 parts. Click on the image for a larger version, or go straight to 'this link' for a printable size.
2. Fill the top wedge with transparent yellow. In oil use transparent Nickel complex PY153, for watercolors I use Tartrazine PY100 or PY153. Old Holland Classic Acrylics has made an orange side isoindolinone PY110 and a brown side nickel azo PY95 with iron oxide PR101.
3. To the right the next color is Orange, 100% transparent yellow and 50% transparent Quinacridone Magenta PR122.
4. The first secondary color is Red, 100% transparent yellow and 100% transparent magenta.
5. Scarlet Crimson is 100% transparent magenta and 50% transparent yellow.
6. The second primary color is 100% transparent magenta, Quinacridone PR122.
7. Next is Purple, 100% transparent magenta and 50% transparent cyan PB15.
8. Blue is next and it's the second secondary color, the opposite color is yellow, mix 100% transparent magenta and 100% transparent cyan
9. Cobalt blue hue is next, 100% transparent cyan and 50 % transparent magenta.
10. The third transparent primary Cyan is next, it's called phthalocyan or phthalo cyan or Thalo cyan, PB15.3.
11. Next is Turquoise, 100% transparent cyan and 50% transparent yellow.
12. Green is the third secondary color, 100% transparent cyan and 100% transparent yellow.
13. The 11th color is to the left of the 1st color Yellow. Yellow-Green is 50% transparent cyan and 100% transparent yellow.

Tips

• This is the Real Color Wheel. Don't try this with the Red-Yellow-Blue color wheel because it won't work. They are not the primary colors.
  1. Don't try this with opaque colors because they won't work. Opaque yellow and opaque yellow-green will lighten all the other colors that it's mixed with. You won't get a deep dark by using opaque yellow or opaque yellow-green..
  2. Opaque magenta and cyan will limit the available range of these two colors. Transparent yellow, magenta and cyan will mix the full range from a thin tint to a full bodied mass-color.
  3. Any transparent color can be made opaque by simply adding white.
  4. Black, is a neutral dark, don't use black pigment, it is recognizable by the gray pall it gives to all colors it is mixed with.
  5. A dark neutral will be made by mixing the three transparent primaries colors together or any two secondary colors together. Each combination of different colors gives different black color results. All close to black but not interchangeable.
