Copy Favorites

Moving your personal data from one computer to another can be a time-consuming process. There's always the possibility of missing an important folder or file. This also applies to copying Internet Explorer bookmarks known as "Favorites." Recreating these in IE can be very tedious, so copy Favorites from one computer to another to ensure data integrity.

Steps

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Favorites button, marked by the yellow star icon, and then click the arrow next to "Add to Favorites."
  3. Select "Import and Export" from the drop-down list.
    • This will launch an "Import/Export Settings" window.
  4. Choose "Export to a file," check the Favorites box then click Next.
    • Click on the things you want to export then click Next again.
  5. Select the folders containing the Favorites you want to move and click "Next."
  6. Browse to the desktop and save the file by clicking the "Export" button.
    • You can copy the exported file onto a thumb drive or external drive, save it to a network location or email the file to yourself.
  7. Complete the export process by clicking the Finish button.
  8. Plug the thumb drive or external drive into a USB port on your new computer or open your email account and download the file.
  9. Open Internet Explorer from your new computer.
  10. Click the Favorites button. Click the arrow next to "Add to Favorites" and select "Import and Export" from the drop-down list.
    • This will again launch an "Import/Export Settings" window.
  11. Choose "Import from a file" by clicking the radio button beside that option.
  12. Check the Favorites option and click "Next."
  13. Browse to the export file, click "Next," "Import" and then "Finish."

Tips

  • ​You can also import Favorites from a different browser on the same computer. Follow the steps and make the appropriate selections when prompted.
  • In addition to the Favorites, you can also choose to export and import Feeds and Newsgroups from one installation of IE to another.

Warnings

  • You cannot simply copy the Favorites folder in your "My Documents" folder from one computer to another and have it work. You must export your favorites as a .htm file and then import the file into IE on your new computer.
