This is an amazing experiment you can do with basically only 3 things. Amaze your friends with this, or get 1st prize at your nearest science fair!
Ingredients
- Basic dough mix, as in modeling clay dough
- Paint (any color of your choice)
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Water
- Food coloring (if preferred)
Steps
- First of all, know that this project is completely safe. But during the process, you'll have to wear some safety goggles and gloves because you'll be dealing with chemicals.
- Gather the materials. You'll find what to take at the "Ingredients" section above.
- Shape the dough mix into the shape of a volcano. Make steep slopes and edges using a craft knife if you like.
- Bake it in the oven until it looks hard enough. Test by inserting a toothpick into one of the sides.
- Insert a cup in the mouth of your model. This is where the chemical reaction will take place.
- Paint your volcano with acrylic paint.
- Stand back. This is where the exciting part takes place.
- Make the eruption mixture. This works only once, but the volcano model will stay permanent.
- Add 8 tablespoons of water and 2 teaspoons of baking soda and a drop of food coloring into a bowl. Mix thoroughly. Pour into the cup.
- This step is where the volcano will erupt. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Wait for a few moments, Then the volcano will erupt like a real-life volcano to astonish your friends!
Tips
- You should erupt it outdoors to be safe!
- Add a cardboard sign labeling the mountain as one of your favorite hills or so.
- Make the bottom side of the mountain hollow. Add a secret little voice recorder for better effects.
- You can make a mini volcano, using, clay, gum and a can soda drink. First, make a volcano shape with the clay around the soda can. Be sure to leave the top open. When you are ready for your volcano to erupt, put the gum in the soda drink, and enjoy the show.
- Make the volcano on a tray to collect the lava (foam).
Warnings
- Be careful when cleaning your volcano.
- When the "lava" falls, quickly remove the voice recording instrument. You don't want your personal things saying bye-bye.
