Cultivate Herbs
Fresh herbs are great to have for use in your kitchen. You can't get any fresher than growing them yourself and cutting them a few minutes before you cook with them.
Steps
- Pay attention to your cooking and figure out which herbs you tend to use a lot of. Some popular favorites include basil, chives, and parsley.
- Get a large flowerpot (or several small ones) and some potting soil. Put the pot in a bright, sunny place that gets at least 10 hours of daylight every day. Most herbs need plenty of sunshine to grow well.
- Buy some herb seeds. You can also get some baby plants that have already been started at most plant nurseries. Sometimes supermarkets sell potted herbs, too.
- Put the plants in your pot in the sunny window, and water them daily, or whenever the soil is dry below the first inch.
- When the herbs have grown green and leafy, cut them with kitchen scissors and use them in your cooking! Don't cut more than you need, and the plant will supply you enough for several recipes.
