Cut Paper Without Using Scissors

Can't find any scissors? You can still cut paper easily and keep it nice and straight using these steps.

Steps

Damp rip

  1. Fold the paper where you want to cut it. For example, all the edges around a picture, or just down one side of a page etc. Make sure you crease it well by folding it first one way then folding it back on itself to go the other way.
  2. Wet the crease that you have created by folding. You can do this with a small drop of water or you can lick it. Repeat this on all sides where you have made creases.
  3. Carefully tear the damp crease until the paper separates. Discard the unwanted pieces of paper.

Ruler rip

  1. Fold the paper on the line or angle where you want it to be divided.
  2. Hold a ruler against the crease.
  3. Push on the ruler. Slowly rip the paper along the folded line while holding the ruler firmly in place.
    • Rip by the tip of the paper.
  4. Remove the ripped piece that you no longer want.
  5. Finished.

Tips

  • Use a ruler if you can't fold straight, and to help you keep straight as you rip along the crease.
  • To "fold tightly", run something hard across the folded edge. For example, press the edge of a ruler on the edge of the fold, and gently (making sure not to tear the paper) but firmly pull the ruler along the fold. You could also use a pencil, or a fingernail to do this too.
  • Be cautious about using water because it can damage the paper.
  • If you have access to a ruler, after folding the paper you can also use the ruler to move into the fold and then rip the paper apart. The sharper the ruler, the better the finish. This will take practice.

Warnings

  • Be careful of paper cuts, particularly finger cuts or on your tongue if you decide to lick the paper.
