Watching Chris Brown’s Movement

  1. Find Chris Brown videos online. There are several different sites, like Youtube, that have Chris Brown music videos available for free. Music videos like “Party” and “Yeah 3x”[2] show Chris Brown dancing throughout the video.
    • Start off basic. Don’t try to learn the hardest Chris Brown dance first.
  2. Study his footwork. Chris Brown uses a lot of challenging footwork when he dances. Take a small section of a dance you would like to learn and break the footwork down. Start from the beginning and then add steps one as a time. Start off slow, then increase your speed. For example, he uses very intricate footwork during the first verse of “Party”. Learn the footwork to this verse, then add the arm movements.[3]
    • Step your right foot to the side. Twist your knees and toes to the right and then the left on counts 1 and 2. Step your right foot back towards your left foot on count 3. Take another step with your left foot on count 4. Repeat this again on counts 5, 6, 7, and 8.
    • Do the “Charleston” by stepping your right foot directly in front of your left foot, then your left foot in front of your right foot. Twist your toes and ankles with each step on counts 1 and 2. Repeat this step on counts 3 and 4.
    • Reverse the Charleston by stepping back with your left foot behind your right foot, and then your right foot behind your left foot. Continue to twist your ankles and toes on counts 5 and 6.
    • Finish the move by stepping back with your left foot and together with your right foot on counts 7 and 8.
  3. Work on your precision. Chris Brown’s dance style is very crisp and clean. Watch the second chorus in “Yeah 3x”. The song has a heavy beat and the movement is very sequential. Take note of the placement of his head, arms, legs, and feet.[2]
  4. Practice alongside the videos. Try to imitate his movement. Slow down the speed and practice this movement several times. Once you think you have the movement down, try practicing it up to speed while watching the video.
    • You can either mirror his movement directly with the video or attempt to reverse the movement.

Perfecting Your Moves

  1. Practice every day. In order to improve your Chris Brown moves you should practice consistently. Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself practicing. Critique your own moves in comparison to the videos that you have watched.[4]
  2. Practice in front of people. Ask some friends or your dance teacher to watch you while you practice. They do not have to be dance experts to give you good tips. Listen to their critiques and try to apply them to the movement.[4]
  3. Use your new skills in public. Once you feel confident with your new skills, try them in public. Go to dance clubs or choreograph a dance for a show. Performing is also a great method of practicing your new skills. When you are performing, be confident.[4]
