Do Your Hair Like Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon (aka Usagi Tsukino) is the most well-known odango atama (Japanese for "meatball head") in anime. Her blonde hair is distinct of her character, and the style itself was made popular because of it. If you want to do your hair like Usagi Tsukino, you'll need to carefully and patiently follow these steps.

Basically, the meatballs comprising Sailor Moon's hairdo are just two pigtails tied into knots. The trick is twisting those pigtails before tying those knots to ensure rounded odango atama.

Steps

  1. Part your hair directly down the center.
  2. Take the first two hair ties, and pull each side into pigtails high on top of your head.
  3. Here's the tricky part. Take the right pigtail and twist it counterclockwise about 2 or 3 times, or until it is a nice and tight.
    • Alternately, you can first take the left pigtail, twisting it clockwise.
  4. *Whichever method you choose, the hair should be twisting inwards, towards the forehead and center parting.
  5. With one hand, place the thumb and index finger underneath the twisted pigtail.
  6. With the other hand, pull the pigtail up, behind, and around over the hair tie.
  7. Using your thumb and index finger, grab hold of the twisted pigtail.
  8. Pull hair through the created loop, and into a knot.
  9. With one hand, tighten the knot while the other hand guides the hair around, creating a rounded odango shape.
  10. Place a hair tie behind the odango (aka meatball), tightly, to keep the knot from coming out.
  11. Repeat process with the other pigtail, twisting in the opposite direction from the first, as stated in step 3. This way, both knots are symmetrical.

Tips

  • If you want to, cut some bangs with a curl at the end, for a more Sailor Moon look.
  • Sailor Moon has blonde hair, but it's okay if your hair isn't.
  • You can add extra accessories like a tiara or:and odango (buns) hair jewels/clips to look more like Sailor Moon.
  • Sailor Moon has two buns and two long strands of hair falling out of the buns. You can buy some hair extensions and clip them onto your buns to look even more like Sailor Moon.

Warnings

  • When wearing this in public, whether cosplay or not, you'll be sure to gather a bit of attention!
  • Be careful about making it too tight; this style will pull on your hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Hair that is, at the very least, chin-length.
  • A brush and/or a comb.
  • Four thin hair ties, preferably close to the color of your hair.
  • Plenty of patience and practice.
