Download Custom Maps for Team Fortress 2

While several maps are included with Team Fortress 2 for the PC, the longevity and replay-ability of the game has been greatly increased through the efforts of players who design and play their own maps. Many servers use these maps. Therefore, a knowledge of how to download these maps is sorely needed.

Steps

Through the game

  1. By far, the easiest method of downloading new maps is through the actual game. Simply enter a server running the custom map, and it will automatically be downloaded to the appropriate folder before plunging you into the game.

Through the Internet

  1. While the preceding method is easiest, it is not always the most time efficient or plausible solution. Some players may find it easier to download these maps through a separate website. To begin, locate a website that has the custom map available for download.
  2. Download the folder or file onto your desktop (or some other place where you won't forget its location), keeping the default name.
  3. Extract the folder. Right click the folder and click "extract all".
  4. Copy the BSP file into your TF2 maps folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\team fortress 2\tf\maps)
  5. Load the game and start the server.

Tips

  • This also works in Counter Strike: Source, Garry's Mod, and pretty much any online Steam game. However, if you choose to copy and paste the file, the path is C:...SteamApps/Garrysmod (or Counter Strike:Source)/Garrysmod (or, again, CS:S)
  • The maps folder is not always on C. It would be under whatever drive you installed Steam on.
  • Sometimes downloading from a website is fastest, or Steam is faster. It depends on the map.

Warnings

  • Always perform a virus check on all downloaded files!
  • If you are not confident in your abilities, backup the files in the TF2 folder. A mistake could render the entire game unplayable.

Things You'll Need

  • A Computer capable of meeting the minimum system requirements of Team Fortress 2 or the Orange Box.
  • The Orange Box or Team Fortress 2 for the PC.
  • An Internet connection (the faster, the better)
