Dress Appropriately for Volleyball Practice

Many times, you just don't know what to wear to volleyball practice. This guide will teach you how to avoid those bad first-timer mistakes.

Steps

  1. Put your hair into a ponytail or a braid if it is long. Your ponytail or braid needs to be tight enough so it won't fall out or come loose. Make sure to keep your bangs or fringe if you have this style of hair, off your face, but make sure to check with your league if you can wear hair clips. Most leagues let you have hair pins but only 2 or less. See if sweat or headbands are allowed; these are great to keep the hair that wouldn't go in your ponytail out of your face.
  2. Wear a t-shirt with a sports bra underneath if required. Avoid wearing a shirt that is too small or too short. Also, avoid shirts that are too tight or too loose. There are many shirts that are designed for athletes, however, you can wear a standard t-shirt. You should be able to move your arms and torso comfortably, and without obstruction.
  3. Wear spandex shorts. Spandex shorts are made for volleyball and are your best option for volleyball practice. Make sure your shorts do not ride up, and are an appropriate length. Basketball and running shorts, can be worn, but may hinder movement.
  4. Knee pads: Bubble kneepads are not recommended because they generally have excess padding. Black or dark colored knee pads, if your knee pads tend to get dirty easily.
  5. Socks: The most common types of volleyball socks are crew and knee socks. In general, you should avoid ankle sock, due to their tendency to slip off. Knee socks tend to be more popular among younger players, while more advanced players tend to prefer crew socks. Both are a great choice because they do not ride down, and can accommodate an ankle brace.
  6. Shoes: If your are just starting out just use running shoes but after you play for a while or play frequently, you should consider purchasing volleyball shoes. Volleyball shoes can be expensive, so if you don't play a lot or are not sure if you'll keep playing do not get volleyball shoes.

Tips

  • ALWAYS have water. And a towel or a small rag to wipe away any sweat.
  • You might want a bag to carry around with all your stuff in it.
  • Make sure you have spare basic clothing items, such as socks, t shirts, etc.
  • Ankle injuries are common. Consider buying ankle braces to protect your ankles. Some coaches might require them.
  • In your bag carry deodorant
  • A sports drink like Gatorade will keep you energized.
  • Don't forget about water!
  • If you play often, you should definitely wear knee pads. Floor burn and bruises can hurt pretty bad without them.

Warnings

  • Volleyball's also very strenuous. If you've never played a sport before, brace yourself; it gets really hard after a while.
  • Sprained ankles are a common injury in volleyball. Consider ankle supports/braces!
