Dress Italian Chic

There are some conspicuous distinctions between Italian and American fashion, particularly for women. While American women are so casual and "normal", Italian women are...well, more "out of the ordinary", especially with fashion.

Steps

For Women: Shoes and Dress

  1. Note that Italian women do not wear flip-flops while parading the streets like a model. Flip-flops, in the picturesque and magnificent Italia, are viewed as only footwear for only the beach, a nail shop for getting your toenails done and for the health spa. So, only wear them to spas, beaches and nail shops.
  2. Don't wear stilettos. Although sexy, it shows too much "sexiness" and that wouldn't be good. Italian women do not wear stilettos, as for the paved streets and cobble stoned sideways. Instead, wear a nice kitten heel and some pretty flats for the springtime and summer; wear cowboy boots and kitten heels for the wintertime and fall time.
  3. Do not wear gym sneakers. They are considered passé in the world of French fashion and etiquette. Neither Italian women nor men would ever wear this kind of shoe, under any circumstances. The women wear brands like Converse or Diesel, which are more of a pluralistic street sneaker with different colors, designs, and fabrics.
  4. Avoid short, short clothes. Miniskirts, micro-miniskirts, short shorts are a no-no. Italian women do not wear that as in old times and of today that shows distaste and symbols prostitution. You can still wear shorts, but only to the beach and spa.
  5. Do not put the hair up. Italian women do not wear their hair in a ponytail. It is viewed as a fashion faux pas because rarely an Italian woman has her hair up, and women, according to Italian men and tourists are more wolf-whistled and catcalled when their hair is down and about.

For Men: Shoes and Dress

  1. Get the shoes right. Italian men wear dress shoes and loafers with every outfit while on the street. They never wear gym shoes or tennis shoes, as they are too classy and trendy for those types of shoes.
  2. Wear lots of black. Women gravitate to men who wear black by 45% than men who don't. Black makes a man look mysterious and sexy. However, don't wear entirely black. Wear a black turtleneck with tan dress pants. You have to mix up some fashion.

Tips

  • Look at some Italian films for inspiration on dress: Open Doors (Porte aperte); Paprika; Il seme della discordia and Lecture 21 (aka 'Lezione 21' 'Lesson 21'). These films have some great costumes and outfits that are quite trendy and are exactly what Italians wear.
