Eat In Class

Most teachers will not allow their students to eat in class, maybe because it can be distracting and kids leave behind trash. Have you ever felt really hungry in class, but it's still hours away to lunchtime? If you follow these steps properly you can learn how to eat in class but not get caught.

Steps

  1. Find something to hide the food in. Carry along a tote bag, backpack, or jacket to store the food in. A baggy sweatshirt or other clothes can work too.
  2. Choose your food carefully. Bring small sized food that fits in your mouth easily. Do not bring big foods or foods that you know make sounds. Avoid bringing messy food. Try jelly beans, hand-held jello, chocolate chips, etc.
    • Opt for little foods that you can hide in your hand on the way to your mouth--raisins, nuts, jelly beans, M&Ms, etc., and food that won't crumble or make noise (crackers are generally not a good idea).
    • Also, greasy food can stain your notes and make your binders all slippery.
  3. Sit as far away from the teacher as possible. Try turning sideways and popping your food into your mouth when your teacher is not looking. You could also pretend to cough and then pop the food into your mouth while covering. Dropping your pencil and eating the food then could work too. Break your food into bite-size chunks under the desk if it is too large.
    • Just be careful. Doing motions that cause distractions, like coughing or dropping something, are more likely to draw attention to you, not take it away.
  4. Watch for your teacher's eyes. Use the concept of "light travels in a straight line". Hunch down and look at your teacher's eyes. Whenever anything blocks your view (e.g. another classmate's head) such that you cannot see your teacher's eyes, it means that he can't see you either. This works well with short teachers and tall classmates.
  5. Chew as quietly as possible. Make as little noise as possible and keep your mouth closed. This may mean eating very slowly.
  6. Bring a water bottle for when you get thirsty. Most teachers will only allow water, but you can try putting a different beverage in an opaque water bottle before hand. You can also put flavored water or any other clear drink in a plain water bottle. No one will ever know the difference!
  7. Enjoy your snack, and pick up after yourself. If your teacher finds trash he/she will begin to suspect.

Tips

  • Chew with your mouth closed. This is especially true for kids in middle school and older because it is a rule of society.
  • Don't eat in a class where the teacher moves around a lot.
  • Bend down and look into your desk like you are looking for something, then pop the food in your mouth.
  • During the first week of school try eating during class. You'll find out who is lenient and who is not.
  • Don't eat anything that you know spills a lot of crumbs and can also spill in your backpack
  • If you are trying to open something like a chip bag or soda, start coughing really loud and open it. But, that might draw more attention to you, making it harder to eat.
  • Try food that dissolves such as cookies.
  • Be sure the foods you choose are not crunchy, and the packages don't make noise when you open them.
  • If you have a lenient teacher right after lunch or brunch/recess, then sometimes they will let you eat in class. If you are not sure, then don't try to hide it. You'll probably just get a warning if it's not allowed.
  • You could also do a little bit of work and present a report on the benefits of maintaining a consistent blood sugar level to your teacher; Diabetics eat 6-7 small meals a day, which means they must eat something at least every two hours. Suggest to your principal that certain snacks be allowed during class (fruit, granola bars, juice, and basic, non-messy foods like a tortilla 'sandwiches' since bread makes crumbs).
  • Try to stick to healthy foods.
  • Try to be as sneaky as possible. If kids come and ask for food, the teacher might get suspicious.
  • If you think someone is going to tell the teacher, you can bribe them with your food. They most likely won't tell.
  • Try chewing with your tongue. Just push on the food with your tongue while sucking. This only works with certain foods, no gummies for example.
  • Firstly, if your teacher doesn't want you to eat in their class then you should respect their wishes and not do so. However if you still feel like eating, try putting something in your pocket and then asking to go to the toilet where you can quickly eat before returning to the class. If going to the toilet is not an option, then quietly eat from your pocket, not putting to much in your mouth at once, and waiting until the teacher is occupied.
  • To best avoid getting caught you should Try to eat, foods which don't crunch, require a lot of chewing and that don't come in noisy packaging.
  • Do not eat anything that has a strong scent your teacher will be able to smell it very easily.
  • Try to bring food that you can easily open such as chocolate, jelly beans, candy floss, etc.
  • Hiding small bagged food in empty pencil cases help a lot and people will think you are only grabbing something, like a pencil. Keep an actual pencil in there just in case your teacher is suspicious and pull it out when they look.

Warnings

  • If you are eating a candy bar, make sure the wrapper does not crackle too much. *Make sure the food does not have a strong scent.
  • Watch out for people who will rat you out.
  • If you have a teacher that allows you to eat, and the Principal walks in, stop eating! You and your teacher might both get in trouble!
  • Try not to bring a soda can because the noise it makes is too loud. Try using a soda bottle.
  • Some teachers even give you punishment for having food in class, so watch out!
  • If you're coughing too much, you might get sent to the nurse.
