Enable JavaScript on Your Computer

Is a website telling you that you need to enable JavaScript in order to properly view it? When JavaScript isn't enabled, you may not be able to fill out online forms, or you may find that buttons or other elements are missing. JavaScript is a fundamental part of many websites, and you’ll need it enabled to get the most out of your web browsing experience. You may have it turned off to protect your privacy however, so if you want to re-enable it, just follow this guide for your browser of choice.

Steps

Internet Explorer

  1. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner. Select Internet Options from the menu.
  2. Click the Security tab. Click “Custom level” button at the bottom of the window. The Security Settings dialog box will pop up.
  3. Look for the Scripting category. Click the Enable option under “Active scripting”. This will allow Internet Explorer to show JavaScript elements on the page.
  4. Click OK twice to close out. Click the Refresh button to reload the webpage with your new settings.

Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu button. This is the button in the top right corner that looks like three small horizontal bars. Select Settings from the menu.
    • Alternatively, you can enter chrome://settings/ into the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Click the “Show advanced settings” link. In the Privacy section, click the “Content settings…” button. This will open a new window.
  3. Find the JavaScript section. Make sure that “Allow all sites to run JavaScript (recommended)” is toggled on.
  4. Check your exceptions. The website you are trying to load may have been added to the exceptions list, preventing it from loading JavaScript even though it is enabled in the browser. Click the “Manage exceptions…” button and then look for any websites that you might want JavaScript enabled on that may be disabled.[1]

Firefox

  1. Check that you aren’t running any JavaScript-blocking extensions. By default, Firefox has JavaScript enabled, and you typically can only disable it by running an extension. To see what extensions you have installed, click the Firefox menu and select Add-ons. This will open the Add-ons Manager.
    • Click the Extensions tab on the left side of the window. Some of the more popular JavaScript-blocking extensions include No-Script, QuickJava, and SettingSanity.
    • Click the extension that is blocking your JavaScript and click the Disable or Remove button.
    • Restart Firefox and attempt to load a webpage with JavaScript.
  2. Check your Firefox advanced settings. There is an option to enable or disable JavaScript buried deep in the Firefox configuration files. If you want to check to see that it hasn’t been accidentally disabled, enter about:config into the Firefox address bar and press Enter.
    • Read the warning and click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button. Making changes to these files and settings may render your installation of Firefox unusable.
    • In the Search bar at the top of the page, enter the term javascript.enabled and press Enter.
    • The value for javascript.enabled should be “true”. If it says “false”, right-click it and select Toggle.
    • Reboot Firefox and try loading a page with JavaScript.
  3. Reinstall Firefox. If all else fails, uninstall and reinstall Firefox to restore all of the default settings. Because JavaScript is a foundation of the Firefox browser, reinstalling should restore its functionality.[2]

Safari

  1. Click the Safari menu. Select Preferences and then click the Security tab.
  2. Ensure that Enable JavaScript is checked. If the box is unchecked, then JavaScript will not load on web pages.
  3. Enable Java on iOS device. Tap Settings and scroll down to the Safari section. Tap Advanced, and then toggle the JavaScript option to ON.[3]

Opera

  1. Click the Opera menu. Hover your mouse over the Settings option.
    • If you don’t have an Opera menu and instead have a traditional menu bar, click Tools.
  2. Hover your mouse over Quick Preferences. Mark the box labeled Enable JavaScript.
  3. Refresh your current webpage. This will load your new settings.[4]

Tips

  • Java and JavaScript are unrelated, and need to be enabled separately. Enable Java to enable Java on your computer
