Enable the Facebook Timeline

Facebook has developed a new profile that is set to go live soon. You can explore before it is released, however, by using Facebook's developer tool to access it. The new timeline profile allows you to easily access all your previous posts and many other new features.[1]

Steps

Enabling the Developer App

  1. Log in to Facebook. Pick the Facebook account you want to enable the timeline for. Since many people have both personal and business accounts, make sure you are logged into the right one.
  2. Find the developer app. The Facebook search box is at the very top of the Facebook homepage. It has the words “Search Facebook” written inside. Type “developer” into the Facebook search box, and click enter.[1] The first result should be an app made by Facebook. The app will have a few hundred thousand users.
  3. Add the app by clicking the blue “Allow” button. Once you click this button, you have enabled the developer app on your Facebook.
  4. Go to the developer app. For this step, you do not have to click on any button. Facebook will take you here automatically after click "Allow."[2]

Creating a New App

  1. Click “Create New App.” This option is in the upper right hand corner of the developer app homepage. Click on the button to create a new app, and then, a pop up box that says “New App” will appear.
  2. Name the New App. The pop up box will have two spaces: one that says “App Display Name,” and one that says “App Namespace.” You can give the new app any name/namespace you want—it doesn't matter for the purposes of enabling your timeline. Check the box that says “Agree to the Platform Privacy Policy,” and then press the blue “Continue” button.
  3. Click "Open Graph" in the left-hand toolbar.[3] After you complete step two, there will be a toolbar on the left-hand side of your screen that says “Open Graph.” Click this button.
  4. Enable “Open Graph.” Once you click “Open Graph,” you will be redirected to a page that says “Open Graph: Getting Started.” There are two boxes here, located under the bold phrase “Start by defining one action and one object for your app.” Again, what you write here does not matter for the purposes of enabling your timeline, so fill the boxes in with anything. Then, click the green “Get Started” button. You have now created the app necessary to enable your timeline.

Getting the Timeline Profile

  1. Click “Home” in the upper right hand corner. This button will take you back to Facebook’s homepage. You can also type “www.facebook.com” in your browser to navigate back to the homepage.
  2. Enable the timeline profile. Once at the homepage, you will see a prompt asking if you would like to enable the new timeline interface before it actually launches.[2] Click “Get It Now.”
  3. Explore the new timeline profile. From here, Facebook will automatically take you on a tour of the new timeline profile. There are many new features to explore, so take your time watching videos and navigating your new profile.
