Engage and Amplify with Flipgrid

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will learn how to create a Grid, Topics, and share with students.
  • Participants will discover ways to use Flipgrid within their learning communities.
  • Participants will earn Flipgrid Certified Educator Level 1 Certification upon course completion.

Module 1: What is Flipgrid?

Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that helps educators see and hear from every student in class and foster a fun and supportive social learning environment. Here’s everything you need to know to get started…

Learning Loves Community

When you set up your free educator account at Flipgrid.com, you’ll first create a Grid for your class. Grids are the canvas you will use to post discussion Topics, to which your students will share short video Responses.

Create a Grid

A Grid is the “home” for your class in Flipgrid. Within your Grid you can post unlimited discussion prompts. We call those Topics.

Add Topics

Topics can include a description, video, GIFs, images, and links - everything you need to get your students talking!

Students Share

Your students then respond to your Topic. With that, you’re ready for your students to post a video Response! Just copy/paste a link to your Grid into Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Schoology, or whatever you use to communicate with your class. Students can access the Grid on any computer with a webcam or on a tablet/mobile device via our free mobiles apps. Our social-media style recorder parallels that of your students’ favorite social apps, allowing them to have FUN while they share their voice!

Module 2: Create your Flipgrid Account and your first Grid.

After you create your Flipgrid account, you'll first set up a learning community. We call that a Grid! You can create as many Grids as you want, so there is no limit to the communities you can engage.

You are in control of your Grid: during the creation process, you have the option to choose one of three Grid Community Types:

(1) School Email: if your students use a school email, choose this option to allow only those within your school domain to access the Grid. After entering your Flip Code, students will authenticate using their school email.

(2) Student ID List: if your students do not have a school email, choose this option to create a class list. After entering your Flip Code, each student will authenticate using a unique code (can be as simple as any 2+ alphanumeric identifier that you decide); you can also print out unique QR codes for each student so all they need to do is scan to enter.

(3) PLC and Public: if you are creating a Grid for adults outside your school district, choose this option to allow any person with your Flip Code access to your Grid. Participants will need to authenticate with a Microsoft or Google email in order to add a video.

Module 3: Creating a Topic

Topics are the discussion prompts that you create for your learners.

Each Topic includes a:

  • Title: What the lesson is about.
  • Topic Description: Your engaging prompt - what you want your students to discuss, share, ask, etc.
  • Video Response Time: The time limit you set for your students' videos. This ranges from 15 seconds to 5 minutes.
  • Topic Moderation: Defaults videos to be hidden and only visible to the educator until made active.

Note, the above are the only fields you need to launch your first Topic! In addition to these options, there are a series of fields and toggles to make your Topic even more powerful and aligned to the needs of your learners. These include a Topic Resource, up to 9 Topic Attachments, Replies, and more. If you want to quickly get going, simply hit those first three and click "Launch Topic" - when you have time, take a moment to explore the other features.

When first introducing Flipgrid to your students, we recommend starting simple to help them become familiar with the platform and speaking up in front of one another. For inspiring first discussion prompts, check out inspire.flipgrid.com.

The @Savvy_Educator says, "If you can think it, you can Flipgrid it!" From book talks to project reflections to cross-grade, global math buddies to sharing holidays and traditions, the only limit to what your students share is what you ask...

Once you're ready to dive into your curriculum and start building out more enriching Topics, head over to the Disco Library! There you'll find thousands of age- and subject-specific prompts from educators around the world. Just as you can when creating a new Topic, you can completely customize the Topics you find in the Disco Library to meet the needs of your curriculum and students. Explore the Disco Library!

Module 4: Students Share

Now that you've created your first Topic, share it with your learning community!

All your students need to find your Topic is that unique Grid Code you created earlier. Have your students enter that code on Flipgrid.com (on any computer with a webcam) or on their app (iOS , Android, Windows 10) and then they can record.
