Fill in an Inground Pool

In ground pools are so large, filling one with a hose could take hours. If for any reason you need to fill your pool with water again, there is hope for a speedy filling. Here is wikiHow to fill in an in ground pool.

Steps

  1. Determine the number of gallons:
    • Length x Width x Depth x Variable = Gallons square, or rectangle variable = 7.5. round, or oval variable = 5.9.
  2. Ask about water sources. If you are seeking to fill with water:
    • If you do not have a well, call the local water authority and ask questions about cost per gallons - it may be possible to get the water without paying a sewage cost.
    • Call the local fire department, many times they will fill for a donation.
    • If you have a well - use your best judgment - and fill the pool up - at times when water use is limited.
  3. Ask about soil sources. If you are seeking to fill with soil:
    • If this is a vinyl lined pool, remove the liner and call a landscaping company that sells topsoil and they will tell you how much topsoil you will need to fill it. Topsoil will be sold in different grades, and usually will be delivered at a reasonable price.
    • Fill it with topsoil. Use a tamper to tamp the soil firmly in to the void that was your pool. Add grass seed work the seed in to a shallow level of soil.
  4. Try rocks. If the pool is very deep, a cheaper way to fill it may be to use rocks very large in size to fill the bottom and then start using the topsoil as someone stated above. Since it is an in-ground pool, this would be perfect for a tiered garden and you would have water access also.

Tips

  • After the bulk of soil has been added, water lightly every few days while tamping the soil to work out any air pockets in the soil. This is important if you plan to seed the new soil and want the site to remain level. Add more soil if needed before seeding.
