Find How Much Space Is Left on a Hard Drive

Finding how much space is left on your hard drive will help you plan so that you can increase your computer's performance. With a totally clogged-up hard drive, your CPU struggles to keep pace with commands. Identifying how much space you have to work with, and then freeing some extra space up, will do wonders for its speed and processing.

Steps

in Any Windows

  1. Click on the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose "Explore" or "My Computer".
  3. Right click on the drive you want to know the space of, usually "C\", select "Properties" and you should be able to see the space left on the hard-rive.

in Linux

  1. Open a terminal window.
  2. Type in "df"
  3. What comes up will look a little unreadable, so type in "df -h".
  4. You should be able to see the space left on the hard-rive.

in Mac

  1. On the desktop, click on the icon representing the hard-rive, usually named "Macintosh HD". If there's no icon like that, access your Mac dock and click on "Finder", then find and right click the "Macintosh HD".
  2. Right click and select "Get Info".
  3. You should be able to see the space left on the hard-rive.
