Find a Band and Be Successful

It can be difficult to find a band and truly be successful. However, there are many outlets that can help you accomplish that goal. This article offers tips and resources that should help you.

Steps

  1. Find a band. They say 1 in 4 people are musicians so at that rate there should be plenty of musicians out there. You can Find a band in a number of ways. First try talking to EVERYONE you know that plays and see what you can come up with.
  2. Keep searching. If you don't have luck with that, you can begin looking in classified ads. The newspapers might have a few band listings. There are several online resources that can help as well. You want to post an ad on all of the classified ad systems you can. Craigslist is a standard classified ad system, for example.
  3. Go find musicians or a band yourself. Now that you have created ads and let the world know you want to start a band, hopefully the right musicians will come find you. But, in the mean time you should begin looking yourself. There aren't many places to find single artists who are looking to start bands. Go to plenty of shows and talk to people. More commonly than not, mutual interest when it comes to music and taste, as well as congeniality, is to be found at a show (where a particular band both parties might be interested in).
  4. Be committed. If you aren't committed then that is your first problem. Even if you're the best musician in the world, there's a chance the band will fire you. Show up for practices, gigs, and any other events. If you can't/don't come, you better have a good reason, because your band members will ask you why you were absent.
  5. Manage the band yourself. Do without a manager or anyone external to the band. Manage your own finances and gigs. By doing this successfully, the band will receive all of the profit and you won't have to contend with people outside of the band voicing their ideas, ideas which can be superfluous and harmful to the band. This way, you will cut short expenses and be able to do things the way you want to, which is most important.
  6. Prepare your EPK. To find gigs you will need an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) There are a great resources for creating, maintaining, and sending your EPK out at websites you can find online. They have a database of venues that use the service to find acts.
  7. Do not, in any way, sign a contract with anyone, including between members of the band. If you want a band to work, there already needs to be a comradeship and chemistry. Honesty among bandmates, what is most natural, is what will keep the band levelheaded to focus on the music. By writ of contract, you are creating something artificial, as if you were contractually obligated to make this music. What is cloaked in writing might just do the opposite -- it might deny someone their rights when they are perfectly justified to speak out. Get rid of any unwarranted, mechanical process and be as truthful as possible -- this way it can even be reflected in the music. Also, the aforementioned step applies to "music business" people as well. Don't sign anything which will render you a slave to someone else's ideal of what the band should sound like. They will control you like puppets, will be making 90% of the profit, and will have a dictatorial control over the music making process. Remember, there is more profit and integrity within the band if you can do it yourself.
