Find the Location of Your Car's Gas Tank

Anyone who has ever suddenly needed gas in a new or unfamiliar car has wrestled with the dilemma--which side of the vehicle is the tank? While this can prompt plenty of hilarity, like in National Lampoon’s Family Vacation; most folks find this query annoying and inefficient. However, don’t despair. There is an easy way to decipher the tank location, even while you are driving the vehicle.

Steps

  1. Survey the vehicle’s dashboard. Identify the gauges and indicators, which should always be done anyway when driving a new vehicle.
    • Look for the fuel gauge in particular to determine if a visit to the gas station should be in order.
  2. Focus on the vehicle’s fuel gauge and look for the gas pump icon. The icon should be located within the circle that contains the gas fill rate.
  3. Locate a small arrow situated next to the gas pump icon. Generally, the icon should be a sideways triangle.
  4. Identify the direction in which the triangle is pointing. The top of the triangle will indicate either left or right.
  5. Follow the triangle directional to determine the gas tank side. For example if the top of the triangle is pointing right, your gas tank is on the right side of your vehicle.

Tips

  • Unfortunately, not every vehicle is equipped with this directional. However, some vehicles simply place the actual gas tank icon on either the left or right side of the gauge.
