A leaky dishwasher can be the result of several factors. Knowing where to check for leaks and how to fix them is vital to get your dishwasher working well again. The following is a guide on how to fix a leaky dishwasher.

Steps

Ensure that human error is not the problem.

  1. Read the manual that came with your dishwasher.
    • Make sure that you have been operating it according to the instructions provided in the manual.
    • Make sure that you have been loading the dishes properly.
  2. Read the label of the dish detergent that you use.
    • Make sure it is safe for dishwashers.
    • Make sure that you have been using the proper amount.

Check the bottom of the dishwasher.

  1. Disconnect the power source of the dishwasher.
    • Unplug it, turn off the power switch, or turn off the circuit breaker for the dishwasher..
  2. Remove the lower front panel.
    • Unscrew it from the dishwasher.
  3. Inspect the drain hose.
    • This runs from the pump to the sink drain.
    • Look for leaks or loose connections.
  4. Replace the drain hose (optional).
    • If there is a leak in the drain hose, purchase a new hose from a hardware or home improvement store.
    • Place a shallow pan under the hose to catch any spills.
    • Pinch the wire clamp with pliers and remove it from the hose.
    • Remove the hose from the pump.
    • Connect a new drain hose to the pump and let the sink drain according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Place the wire clamp into the new drain hose.
  5. Inspect the pump.
    • Check for leaks.
    • If the pump is leaking, contact a professional plumber to fix it. This is not a job that is suitable for non-professionals.
  6. Inspect the bottom of the dishwasher.
    • Check for corrosion.
    • If there is corrosion, use an epoxy kit to repair it. Follow the instructions on the kit for best results.
  7. Replace the lower front panel.
    • Screw it back into place
  8. Reconnect the power source to the dishwasher.

Check for door leaks.

  1. Inspect the gasket.
    • This is a rubber strip on the door that keeps the water inside the dishwasher.
    • Check to see if it is worn, cracked, or damaged in any other way.
    • If it is damaged, this is the source of the leak. Otherwise, the problem is not with the door.
  2. Purchase a new gasket.
    • This can be purchased through the dishwasher's manufacturer, a hardware store, or a home improvement store.
  3. Soak the gasket in a tub of warm, soapy water.
    • This will make it easier to handle and install.
  4. Disconnect the power source of the dishwasher.
  5. Remove the existing gasket.
    • Pry it off with a screwdriver.
    • Remove any screws or clips that hold it in place.
  6. Install the new gasket.
    • Start at the top of the door area and then the sides. Finish with the bottom of the door area.
    • Use any screws or clips that you removed from the previous gasket to hold the new gasket in place.
  7. Reconnect the power source to the dishwasher.
