Get a Green Card as an International Student

A lot of times, international students studying in the United States aren't interested in going back to their home country after they finish their studies. If this sounds like you, then check out the following ways in which you can obtain a green card.

Steps

Getting sponsored by an employer

  1. Apply for a job that is able to sponsor international students for a Green Card: A lot of companies sponsor international students for Green Cards. However, this process can be expensive so companies can only sponsor you if they can show that they cannot find an equally qualified American citizen for the job. Although it is hard to get a Green Card through job sponsorship, it is not impossible. If you have specialized skills in high-demand fields like engineering or medicine, and their aren't a lot of Americans qualified for that type of work, you will have a higher chance of getting a sponsored.

Getting married

  1. Talk to the US citizen you are in a relationship about getting married. This is probably the easiest way to get a green card.
    • Although this method is easy, it can carry a lot of dangers. You will be asked several questions like how you met one one another, intimate details of your lives, if you have any children, if your spouse's family knows about you etc.
    • The main thing to note here is to have a real marriage and to only marry the U.S. citizen if you love him/her. Otherwise, you may face grave legal consequences.
    • Always consult with a reputable lawyer before filling out any immigration papers.
  2. Get married.
  3. File the paperwork so your spouse may sponsor you for a Green Card as a family member.

Entering the Diversity Visa Lottery

  1. Apply for the Diversity Visa Lottery: If you win this lottery you will be issued a U.S. Green Card and will be able to work and live in the States. There is no guarantee to win, though. It is just a lottery after all, and your chances of winning may be slim. But it's worth a try.

Getting a position with the US military

  1. Serve the United States Military: As a rule, non-US citizens cannot join the US Army, Navy, Marines, or the Air Force if you do not already have a Green Card or work permit. However, you can still join the military by pursuing careers that are high demand in the military, like doctors, nurses, and psychologists. Talk to military recruiters at you college for more information on this. If you join the military, you MUST hire a lawyer to go through the Green Card application.

Warnings

  • When applying for a Green Card or when filling out any immigration forms it is of paramount importance that you consult with a reputable lawyer. The immigration process is complicated and can lead to serious consequences if you are found to be cheating in any way. Therefore, you should hire a lawyer. Although lawyers can be expensive, they are worth every penny they charge, considering the cost of failure.

If you call to ask if you can join the military, hmm bad response as International student.
