Get the Recognition You Deserve at Work

Too often, we find ourselves being overlooked. Even if you like being behind the scenes, some recognition and appreciation is always appreciated. There are things that you can do to improve your self worth.

Steps

  1. Make a point of recognizing others. This will create a more positive work environment and encourage others to do the same. You aren't the only one that wants appreciation for what they do.
  2. Keep in close touch with your boss. Don't just do what they tell you to do. Go to them and ask them what they need. Anticipate their wishes before they have them. Your boss will come to quickly rely on you.
  3. Find out if there are formal ways of recognizing someone at work. Be Named Employee of the Month or incentive programs like that.
  4. Don't hog all of the credit. Whether or not, it is due, always share the credit with others. They will, more than likely, return the favor. You don't want to be known as a 'Glory Hog'.
  5. Show others that you work with, the same respect that you want from them. If you are rude and snide to them, don't expect anything back from them.
  6. When you do receive some type of recognition, accept it with Practice Grace under Pressure. Do Not respond with, 'Finally!'. Tailor your response to the situation.
  7. Determine the type of recognition that you want. Do you want a raise, an award, a plaque, social recognition, etc. Maybe all you want is a 'Thank you for what you do.'.
  8. Put some time and thought into why you deserve the recognition that you desire. Be honest with yourself; Are you really all that?
  9. Push yourself to the next level. Don't just do your job. Do it better. Do it more.

Tips

  • It can help you personally, and professionally, to keep track of your achievements, on paper. There are times that if you don't mention something that was done, it will be forgotten.
