Get to 100 Smithing in Skyrim

So do you fancy working towards a set of Daedric armor? Or is it making money through selling weapons you've crafted and fine-tuned? Whatever the reason you want to get to 100 smithing, here is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient strategy.

Steps

500 daggers for sale

  1. Obtain some iron ingots and leather strips, these can be bought from smithers, general stores and/or looted from various locations. You may also steal them if you want to take the risk.
  2. Go up to any forge once you've obtained the above items. Spam iron daggers (1 dagger requires 1 iron ingot and 1 leather strip), these short blades give you the most xp, for the least money/equipment out of all create-able armor/weapons. You also don't need any perks, you'll be able to make them from the start of the game.
  3. Sell all of the daggers you make so as not to over-encumber yourself, and repeat. You only need around 500 daggers to get to level 100 smithing from scratch, this may sound like a lot but you'll get there in around 5 hours. (including waiting for stock to resupply e.t.c...)

Fear enchanted daggers

  1. Buy iron and leather strips.
  2. Complete the Stormcloak quests.
  3. Get Ulfric's sword.
  4. Disenchant the sword.
  5. Enchant the iron daggers with fear.
  6. Sell them to make profit.

Using the Shop Respawn Method

  1. Go to Dawnstar. Travel to Dawnstar. If you have just started the game, you can travel there by hiring a cart from the Whiterun stables.
  2. Locate the Dawnstar chest. On the right side of town, to the left of the smelter and mine there's a tree with some rocks. There's also a chest in the empty space in the middle. You won't be able to see the chest. However, it has 750 gold as well as poison, enchanted equipment and grand soul gems, etc. because it's a merchant chest. This is the check known as the "Dawnstar chest".
  3. Attack the merchant. The chest belongs to a Khajiit merchant, named Ahkari. After you take what you need from the chest, go to her, save, attack her, and reload. Her inventory should be restocked with all of the gold and soul gems (the number of which is random).
    • Please note that you need to talk to her and ask to see her inventory as well, so the chest can refresh it's contents.
  4. Rinse and repeat. Repeat the process until you have a large amount of money and soul gems.
  5. Disenchant the items. In the Jarl's building in Dawnstar, which is next to the mine and smelter, is an enchanting table. Take the equipment you took from the chest and disenchant it to learn the enchantments each time you use the chest.
  6. Buy ingots and leather. After doing this over and over again you should have enough septims to buy as many iron ingots and leather strips as you want. Go to the blacksmith in Dawnstar and buy them. Then save, attack him and reload so his inventory restocks.
  7. Make all the daggers. Go crazy making iron daggers. These are the easiest way to level up your skills.
  8. Enchant the daggers. Enchant each one of the iron daggers and sell them back to blacksmith. When he runs out of gold, just save and attack and reload again so his gold replenishes.
  9. Enjoy your new mad skills. Have fun destroying everything with ebony weapons and armor that have two enchantments on them.

Tips

  • If you have 80+ smithing, you can make ebony war hammers and upgrade them you will get profit and a lot of xp.
  • Don't forget you can give armor/weapons you don't want to a follower if you have one (such as Lydia) and if they are better than the armor/weapons your follower has equipped they will replace them.
  • You may also choose to mine iron ore and smelt them into iron ingots yourself, though this is usually slower, and requires more travel.
  • Try to keep an equal amount of ingots and strips, so you won't have excess weight on you whilst doing other things.
  • In Riften, the smith there Balimund has an abundance of iron ingots and some leather strips you can steal from the basement of his house (the one next to his forge)

Warnings

  • Balimund's assistant might be in the basement.
  • A patch to Skyrim now makes it so that Smithing skill increases according to the item's value, so Iron Daggers are no longer a good way to grind smithing. Instead, find Fortify Smithing enchanted gear, pick the Warrior Stone when you find or revisit the Guardian Stone, go to sleep in a bed(preferably one you own) and if you can, get the Ancient Knowledge permanent perk by taking From-Deepest-Fathoms' side quest, which involves delving into a Dwarven ruin. To find the Argonian, she is usually standing on the Riften Docks. Loot the Automatons in the ruin to get pieces of Dwemer scrap and hunt for it too, as these can be used to make Dwarven equipment. Dwarven gear has a nice, moderate value. Improving and selling it will improve both your Smithing and Speech.
  • Be careful not to accidentally sell your weapons, always keep your thumb on the 'exit' button.
