Grow Your Hair Super Long

Long hair is an age-old beauty trend that will always be in style. Unfortunately, getting super long hair isn't always easy. Whether your hair is long or short, you can try many of these methods at once to help your hair grow incredibly long. Not only will the length of your hair increase, but the health of your strands will improve too.

Steps

Making Lifestyle Changes

  1. Trim your hair half an inch every 1-2 months. Neglecting the tips of your hair for too long will cause split ends that will ride up your hairs making it look unkempt. This may seem like it would slow down your hair growth, but it's not healthy to just not get a trim every once in a while.
  1. Adjust your washing. Clean hair is certainly desired, but cleansing your hair too often can strip it of the oils that keep it healthy, making it more brittle and prone to breaking. To prevent this premature breakage, minimize the numbers of times you shampoo your hair to 2-3 times a week at most. If you can wash your hair only a single time per week, all the better.  When rinsing shampoo off do it with cold water.
  2. Stay away from heat. The high temperatures of blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons may work wonders on taming your locks, but on the downside? They seriously fry your hair and cause a lot of breakage. Avoid using these heat-powered tools whenever possible, and if you must use them, adjust the heat to the lowest setting.
  3. Avoid harsh chemicals. For the same reasons as frequent washing and usage of hot tools, dousing your hair with chemical dyes, relaxers, and perms makes it brittle and more likely to snap. Chemicals may be the most detrimental to long hair growth out of all the causes of damage. Never perm or relax your hair, and if you absolutely must dye it try using an all natural dye like henna.[1]
  4. Protect your hair from the sun. Exposure to UVA and UVB rays present in sunlight can strip your hair down and damage it over time. In general, try to minimize your exposure to direct sunlight or tanning beds to no more than a few hours a day. When you are in the sun though, keep your hair under wraps in a hat or scarf.
  5. Stay in fresh water. Summer weather beckons trips to the pool and beach, but all that salt and chlorine can really do a doozy on your hair. These additives to the water cause it to dry out, making it (you guessed it!) more likely to break. Try to avoid these types of water when possible (use a shower cap!), and if you can’t avoid it condition your hair immediately afterwards.
  6. Eat healthy. The benefits of good eating are seemingly endless, with one of the positive side effects being enhanced hair growth. Minimize the amount of animal fats, sugar, and sodium in your diet and increase the levels of fresh fruits and vegetables that you consume. Doing this will encourage hair growth from the inside out, and strengthen each individual strand of hair over time.
  7. Hydrate yourself. Lots of water clears out toxins in your body, and helps support the systems that run it. To aid your body’s push for growing long hair, make sure that you stay hydrated on a daily basis. Drink around 8 cups of fluids today, focusing primarily on water. Over a period of several weeks or months, you will notice a definite change in your hair (and skin, and nails, and mental health…).
  8. Minimize your stress. High stress levels minimizes your health, and poor health inhibits hair growth. The solution? Deal with your stress so that it doesn't have an effect on the length of your hair! Take the time that you need to help yourself detox from life’s anxieties, and you’ll be growing luscious locks in no time.

Making Immediate Changes

  1. Let your hair down. Constant use of elastic bands, pins, and clips stresses out your hair making it prone to breaking. Although it is certainly easier (especially if you’re keeping your hair washing to a minimum) to just throw your hair up and be done with it, you’re increasing the damage done to your hair. When you can, let your hair loose and leave it unpinned.
  2. Brush it out. The main reason for frequent hair washing is a buildup of natural oils near the scalp. These oils are created by your body to nourish your hair and help it to grow out long. The problem? They get stuck at your scalp and have a difficult time travelling down the shaft of the hair, especially when it's already on the long side. To distribute the oils and keep your hair soft and healthy, use a natural bristle brush to comb your hair 1-2 times a day. However, avoid brushing your hair when it's wet as this will increase the likelihood of breakage while brushing.
  3. Get a new shampoo. It’s nice to be frugal but if you’re buying cheap shampoo with added silicone you’re preventing your hair from growing long. Silicone in shampoo coats your strands of hair and blocks out nutrients, making it difficult for hair to get the things it needs to stay healthy. Spend a few extra dollars to purchase a shampoo lacking this specific ingredient and your hair will be reaping the benefits.
  4. Try using biotin. Biotin is a nifty supplement that greatly increases the growth of proteins in your hair and nails. You can purchase biotin supplements in health food stores. Taken on a daily basis, your hair will grow in faster and stronger, making a significant push for length in the process.
  5. Take your vitamins. Most of the vitamins necessary for healthy hair come in the fruits and vegetables you should eat on a daily basis. To get an extra punch from these vitamins though, take a bit extra on a daily basis. Choose a multivitamin, or try taking supplements for vitamins A, B2, and E which all benefit hair growth.[2]
  6. Get a hot oil massage. A scalp bogged down in product buildup and poor circulation will slow the growth of hair. Keep your scalp in tip top shape with hot oil massages. Heat up jojoba, coconut, or olive oil in proportion to your total amount of hair. When it is warm (not hot) to the touch, massage it into your scalp. The heat and pressure from the oil and your massage will increase the production of hair from the root. Let the oil sit in your hair for at least 15 minutes before rinsing it out.
  7. Make an egg white mask. After numerous trials over the years, it looks as if egg whites help increase the speed at which your hair grows. Whip up a few egg whites and apply them to your hair, focusing on the root. Allow the mask to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing it out. The egg whites will stimulate hair growth while adding shine and luster to dull hair.
  8. Do a deep conditioning treatment. Deep conditioning treatments, available at salons or for purchase from beauty supply stores, help to quickly replenish nutrients and youth to your hair in a single sitting. Do these once a month on your hair to keep it strong and increase its growth speed.

Using Home Remedies

  1. Wash your hair with onion water. Get your tresses to be super sleek and shiny while supplementing them with nutrients by rinsing your hair with onion water. Cut up an onion and boil it in several cups of water. Allow the onion water to cool, strain out the onion, and pour it through your hair. Massage it into your scalp before rinsing the onion water out again.
  2. Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar. Among the multitude of uses for apple cider vinegar is increasing hair growth through frequent rinsing. After you finish shampooing your hair in the shower, rinse it out with apple cider vinegar. Follow with your regular conditioner and rinse with warm water.
  3. Try a grapeseed oil massage. This lovely oil is often an ingredient in popular hair care products, and can be used on its own to increase hair growth. Pour some oil (room temperature or warm) onto your scalp and massage it in with your fingers. Allow it to set for up to an hour. Do this 2-3 nights a week for the best results.
  4. Add a bit of palm oil to your strands. Rather than focusing on the scalp, adding palm oil to the length of your strands will increase its vitality and prevent it from breaking. Thoroughly coat the ends and middle sections of your hair with palm oil, and allow it to soak in for 10 minutes. Rinse it out with your regular washing routine as you normally would. Doing this 2 times a week for several months will keep your hair stronger over time.
  5. Switch over to silk pillow covers. Pillowcases made from cotton or linen, although may feel soft, are rough enough to grab strands of hair and cause unnecessary breakage. Prevent this from happening by simply switching to a silk pillowcase. It will stop unwanted friction on your hair while you sleep, and is extra comfortable for heading to bed.[3]

Tips

  • To keep your hair in good condition between trims, use shears to cut off the little flyaways that stick out. To do this, take a section of hair, twist it a bunch, and then snip off the ends of any strands that stick out from this spiral.
  • Wash your hair every three days. This will let hair produce more good and natural oils. Also this will make the hair healthier.
  • Stop thinking negatively. If you think or act stressed or negatively, your anagen phase will halt causing hair growth to slow down.
  • Be patient, It will grow if you follow some of these steps .
  • Put conditioner on your hair once a week. This will make it stronger.
  • If you have curly hair it may not look like it's growing much and you may want to give up but you shouldn't mostly because it's natural.
  • Being patient is the number one key to growing your hair! Don't worry it will grow. Remember that it won't grow overnight and your hair will always be beautiful long or not.
  • Take biotin and fish oil.
  • Put your hair in a braid every night this also gives you nice waves.
  • Do not wash your hair every day with shampoo because you will be also washing out the nutrients that helps your hair grow healthier.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner once a week.
  • Do not use rubber bands to secure braiding as this pulls on the hair and adds tension making hair strands snap while you take them out.
  • Another thing you can do if you swim in the ocean or in the pool is apply a very very small amount of any oil (Jojoba, Avocado, Almond, etc.) and a very very small amount of your conditioner or conditioning mask. (Braid your hair if your hair is long) and wear a swim cap.
  • Avoid using shampoo that contains sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate - it causes eye and skin irritation.
  • Put conditioner at the end of your hair to avoid split ends.
