Hang a Muffler

Hanging a muffler is the last step in its replacement, but it can cause some issues for those who don't know much about car repair. Muffler hangers are important because they hold up and protect the muffler from driving-related impacts and harsh-weather elements. A dangling muffler is simply in need of a hanger replacement, and you can learn how to hang a muffler by following a few steps.

Steps

  1. Purchase a new muffler hanger. Also called muffler straps, muffler hangers are thick rubber loops. Your exhaust system may require more than 1 hanger, so look underneath the car to see if it requires any additional muffler hangers. Buy replacements for any that are broken or weakened.
  2. Install your muffler if you have just purchased a new one or make sure it is installed properly if it is already installed. Let the muffler rest on a floor jack while you get the hanger ready in the following steps.[1]
  3. Remove any old muffler hangers from the top mount and the muffler itself.[2] Some hangers might be constructed into 2 pieces, so make sure to remove all parts of the hanger.[3]
  4. Install the muffler hanger. First hang it from the top exhaust mount, which is attached to the bottom of your car. Let the muffler hanger dangle temporarily.[4]
  5. Use a crescent wrench that has a hole at the end of its handle to hang the muffler. Pull up the muffler closer to the top exhaust mount so you can hook them together. Slide the handle through the muffler hanger, and hook the handle hole onto the exhaust mount located on the muffler. Slide the rubber muffler hanger along the wrench handle, and hook it over the muffler's exhaust mount.[5]

Tips

  • Purchase some extra muffler hangers for future repair jobs. The next time your muffler hanger breaks, you will be prepared and won't have to drive around with a loose muffler.
  • Contact a certified mechanic if you are having trouble hanging your muffler yourself or feel overwhelmed by the task.
  • If you don't have a crescent wrench, you can ask someone to hold up the muffler while you attach the muffler hanger.

Warnings

  • Like all rubber pieces, muffler hangers will have to eventually be replaced. This includes the hangers you just installed, so keep in mind that this will not be the last time you will replace your muffler hangers.
  • It is very important to make sure your muffler hanger (or in some cases multiple muffler hangers) remain fully intact. Weak or broken muffler hangers will cause your muffler to dangle and get damaged very quickly. The muffler should not hang tightly, but it should hang securely to withstand bumps and normal driving impact. Inspect your exhaust system regularly.
