Improve Your Tennis Game
Tennis is a tough sport, don't let anyone tell you differently, but as hard as it is, you can improve your game right now, all you have to do is continue reading and if you are truly interested in getting better, do one or all of the recommended steps.
Steps
- Practice, although just playing is not enough; you have to play with the right people, play often, and play under the right learning atmosphere. Just getting together with your regular partner 1-3 times a week is not enough and may even hurt your game; it will most definitely stop you from improving. You will make the same mistakes over and over, and the game will continue to be a major challenge.
- Play more than one player
- Play against more than one style
- Play against better players
- Treat matches as tennis lessons
- When practicing, practice with intent--pick specific things to work on and practice your weakest shots
- Sign up for a summer tennis camp. A good camp will have:
- professional tennis instructors who are career tennis instructors
- instruction for every level of player
- low instructor-to-camper ratio
- plenty of competitive match play
- at least three hours of instruction per day in addition to match play
- Play under pressure, where if you don't win you will lose something, and if you win you will win something; there must be a reward and punishment. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat goes a long way at improving your tennis game.
Tips
- You can improve your tennis through practicing alone. Hitting against a wall (ideally a "real" rebound wall or net) develops both your shot placement and your returning ability. Serving practice is invaluable; it allows you to relax and to take many more serves than game play allows. And of course you can do these things any time you desire, no need to coordinate with a partner.
- If you have a regular partner try to focus on the mistakes you make over and over again. By concentrating on your weaknesses, you will improve your skills. In the beginning it will be boring and will make you angry/sad by making a lot of mistakes. Once you improved your game, you will feel a lot better and have a lot more confidence.
