Improvise a Sleeping Cap

Sleeping caps are used to protect the hair from damage and prevent flyaways while sleeping. If you've misplaced your sleeping cap, or you never had one to begin with, here's a quick process to make your own with objects you probably have around the house.

Steps

  1. Choose a pair of satiny, silky exercise shorts. Look for some that have a short inseam. It's also best if they have a drawstring.
  2. Turn them inside out or keep the shorts right side out. Just make it so that the drawstring is on the outside.
  3. Arrange your hair into an even shape around your head. You may wrap and pin it if the style is sleek and straight. If your style is wavy or curly, try putting the hair up in a loose, high ponytail with a scrunchie. You can also try putting the hair into two braids or french braid pigtails. Twist the braids around each other at the base of your head. If your hair is naturally dry, try adding some conditioner and water to the ends to preserve moisture for second day hair.
  4. Pull the waistband of the shorts over your head and hair. (The shorts should be upside down.)
  5. Pull the drawstring tight, and tie it in a bow. If the drawstring is inside the shorts, flipping the waistband up so it's outside may help it stay in place. Otherwise just pull it tight and tie.
  6. Tie the pants legs together with a bit of string or a hair tie. Make sure there are no holes for your hair to escape from.
  7. Tuck in any loose hairs, and you're good to go. Sleep tight!

Tips

  • This looks rather silly. Looking weird at night is preferable to bed head during the day, however.
  • If you do this well, you won't have to remake the sleeping cap every day and you'll be able to reuse it.
  • Since your hair gets damaged when it rubs against your clothes or pillow at night instead of using this put your hair in a loose but really really high ponytail or a really, really high bun and if you have bangs make sure to wet them down and push them back or pin them with a bobby pin and don't use any heat.
