Install Torch Down Roofing

Torch down roofing is a type of roofing that consists of levels of modified bitumen--similar to asphalt--heat-adhered to layers of fiberglass. Used only for flat or nearly-flat roofs, torch down roofing is an excellent means of preventing moisture build-up and obviating the need for constant maintenance. Though not recommended for use in areas of especially heavy rain or snow, torch down roofing is generally available everywhere, and can be applied in a few hours with a relatively simple process.

Steps

  1. Remove any old roofing, debris, or other objects from the surface that is to be roofed.
    • Removing old roofing is not always necessary; check with local building codes. Often, torch down roofing can be installed directly on top of old roofing.
  2. Secure metal flashing to the edges of the roof area.
  3. Apply primer to the metal flashing to allow the torch down roofing to adhere to it more easily.
  4. Lay the first fiberglass sheet on top of the roof area and make sure that it lies flat and even.
  5. Secure the fiberglass sheet to the roof surface with a nail gun. Put a nail about every 5 inches (or 13 cm) or so.
  6. Roll the first layer of modified bitumen over the fiberglass sheet.
  7. Cut the layer of modified bitumen to size using a knife. You should be able to stretch the modified bitumen to cover any odd corners or angles.
  8. Roll up one half of the modified bitumen so that one half of the fiberglass sheet is exposed.
  9. Begin firing the underside of the modified bitumen using the flame torch using slow, steady motions to heat the bitumen evenly.
  10. Roll the bitumen back onto the fiberglass sheet as it begins to liquefy, pressing it down with your boot so that it adheres.
  11. Finish firing and applying the first half of bitumen. Repeat for the other half.
  12. Go over the first layer of modified bitumen once it has been fired and applied to the fiberglass sheet. Steep on it with heavy boots so that it sticks to the fiberglass.
  13. Repeat Steps 5-13 twice so that there are three layers of fiberglass and modified bitumen on top of each other, with a layer of modified bitumen on top.

Tips

  • The most difficult part of installing torch down roofing is getting the roofing materials onto the roof. Consult with your roofing provider about the availability of roof-top delivery.
  • Make sure that you apply modified bitumen on top of the metal flashing to create a ridge for your roof. If the modified bitumen seems looser at the edges, go around with your knife and pry the modified bitumen from the fiberglass, reheating it with your flame torch and pressing it down especially hard onto the metal.
  • Although it's possible to apply only one layer of torch down roofing, it's best to apply three. The durability of your roof increases with each layer and torch down roofing applied all at once has the advantage of cohering more strongly together.

Warnings

  • Never install torch down roofing alone. Have a friend watch you as you use the flame torch and follow you with the roll of modified bitumen so that it is applied to the fiberglass before it can solidify.
