Keep Warm in Bed

As the temperature drops, it's important to feel warm and comfortable around bedtime. Here are some tips to keep warm and get a good sleep, no matter how cold it is outside.

Steps

  1. Wear the right pajamas. Ones with shorts or short sleeves are not good for when it's really cold and neither is a short nightdress. Try long-sleeved pajamas with long pajama bottoms. A one-piece pair of pajamas can be a great idea too, especially one with feet.
  2. Put a hot water bottle in the bed— there's no easier way of keeping them warm at night. Make sure the water is hot from the tap but not boiling. Do not free-quarters full. Squeeze out any remaining air, put the stopper in, and dry the top and sides. Then put it into its cover, which 1) it protects feet against too much heat, and 2) because it totally transforms something functional and ordinary into something very cute and pretty which the grumpiest of teenagers will love to have in their bed! Put it in the bed for at least 30 minutes before bedtime, so it has enough time to make the bed lovely and warm.
  3. Try bed socks if a hot water bottle isn't enough. These aren't like ordinary socks. These are furry and thicker and will keep feet warm in case they get cold. Go to the store and find a fuzzy style in a color you love.
  4. Pull your pillows closer to the duvet or sheet. Then only your head will be sticking out but don't pull the pillow too far so that you're under the duvet or sheet.
  5. Get blankets. Fleece blankets are recommended as they are soft and warm. Either put them under the duvet or sheet or on top An electric blanket sound a good idea, but you have to remember to turn it off—a hot water bottle is much simpler and doesn't use electricity.
  6. Don't turn the heating up too high. A better (and greener) solution is to wear an extra layer under your pajamas if it's really cold.
    • Try scheduling the heat to turn up only 30 minutes before you plan to wake up, so you don't have to wake up to a freezing room. This will make it easier to get up in the morning.

Tips

  • Make sure the blankets and other items are clean before you use them.
  • Ensure that your kids/children/teenagers;
    • Drink something warm before going to bed.
    • Have gathered all their supplies before bedtime so they don't have to start rushing around the house looking for things.
    • Keep blankets tight to trap air into the space.
    • Don't wear too much when they are in the bed.
  • Try moving in place in bed... this will make more friction which will generate more heat.
  • Wearing slippers and a bathrobe in addition to long sleeved pajamas will help keep you warm. Also, if you are relaxing in the family room, use a blanket for about an hour before you go to bed.
  • Make sure you have a comfortable bed, being comfortable can relax the body and let heat generate faster.

Warnings

  • Turn off any electric blankets before going to sleep.
  • Be careful not to overheat.
  • Don't let children fill their hot water bottle themselves - always do it for them.
