Keep Your PC Running Fast and Smooth

Windows was designed to be user friendly and this convenience directly contributes to its success. The drawback is that the more convenient something is, the more potential there might be for conflict. But remember, installing a lot of antivirus does not help your computer run smoother, consider sticking to the Windows's windows defender antivirus since its lightweight and is built-in.

Steps

Installing safety features

  1. Install an anti-virus software.Never use the Internet without anti-virus software installed and make sure that it is updated if it doesn't already do this automatically. Some popular antivirus systems are Windows Defender (Windows 8, 8.1, and 10) and Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows 7).
  2. If your computer is connected to Internet running Windows XP or another previous Windows operating system, its better to use Firewall with both inward and outward bound protection. Search online for more firewall options.

Staying up-to-date

  1. Keep Windows up to date.Be diligent in checking for updates to your Windows operating system.
  2. You must make sure your system can handle any upgrade. Most software and hardware manufacturers list the system requirements to use their product. Whenever planning to do a hardware or software upgrade, always make sure your system has the necessary resources and can handle the upgrade.

Keeping things tidy

  1. Always use "Add or Remove Programs" to remove installed software. Never just delete software or applications that are installed on your computer. The Add or Remove Programs option located in the control panel is a great feature built into Windows to detect and use Uninstaller scripts. It's important to use the Add or Remove Programs option otherwise you can corrupt other parts of the system if they happen to be sharing any of the same files.
  2. Do a disk cleanup by following the steps given below.
    • Go to start and search for Disk Cleanup.
    • Once its opened, select the files you would like to clean and click OK.
    • Allow the process to finish and you are done!
  3. Always keep the hard disk free space above 15%.
  4. Install new programs in a partition other than 'C:\'.

Removing unwanted elements

  1. Go to your task bar, open up the unwanted programs and uncheck the 'start at windows startup' (wording may vary with each version) option from settings in respective programs.
  2. Open up the start menu and click 'startup.' Delete all unwanted short cuts that you do not want every time on your system startup.
