Knit the Purl Stitch

Knitting is a very relaxing hobby. There are many different types of knitting stitches, however the knit and the purl stitches are the basic stitches used in many patterns and by knitting a row of knit stitch and a row of purl stitch you will achieve the stockinette stitch. If you look at the reverse side of several rows of purl stitch you will see it looks like the knit stitch!

Steps

  1. Cast on as many stitches as you would like.
  2. Hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand.
  3. Push the tip of the right needle into the front of the loop of first stitch on the left needle so that it crosses in front of the left needle.
  4. Place the yarn between the crossed needles. Hold the stitch on the first left needle with your thumb and forefinger to stop it from slipping off the needle.
  5. Keeping an even tension with the wool, wrap it counterclockwise around the left needle, from between the needles to the front of the loop.
  6. Gently pull the tip of the right needle out through the first loop, taking the yarn with it. Make sure that you do not pull too hard or you may pull some of the stitches off the left needle.
  7. Carefully place the knitted purl stitch on the right needle.
  8. Observe your first purl stitch on the right needle.
  9. Purl all the cast on stitches in the same way to produce a row of purled stitches.
  10. Purl your second row and those to follow in exactly the same way as the first. Watch as your purled fabric begins to grow. If you purl all your stitches, you are making a garter stitch. stitch.

Tips

  • Instead of purling your second row, you can knit it instead. This will create what is called the stockinette stitch. In stockinette stitch, one side of your fabric will be smooth and the other will be bumpy, giving a very professional finish. Stockinette stitch is a popular choice for knitters and allows you to knit almost anything you want.
  • Many sweaters are made with knit one row, purl the next row, so that the outside of the sweater is not bumpy but smooth, just like a bought sweater. The inside, the side next to your body, has the bumps. Look at a store bought sweater for an example.
  • Practice with large needles and thick yarn. As soon as you get the hang of knitting the stitches use the smaller sized needles as suggested on the pattern you want to knit.
