Make Coconut Lip Balm

These recipes for coconut lip balm will produce a lip balm gives your lips shine and softness. In addition, the balm smells and tastes great. The first lip balm is ideal for creating soft, clear lips, while the second one will soften and provide a hint of color as well.

Ingredients

Plain coconut lip balm:

  • 1 teaspoon petroleum jelly
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 4 drops vanilla extract
  • 5 drops almond extract

Kool Aid and coconut lip balm:

  • Kool-Aid
  • Water
  • Sugar, superfine or caster (optional but recommended)
  • Coconut oil (solid)

Steps

Plain coconut lip balm

  1. Put the petroleum jelly in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Heat for 2 minutes, or until melted.
  3. Mix in the coconut oil, vanilla extract and almond extract.
  4. Pour into lip balm container, and freeze for 20 minutes. If there is more lip balm left over, pour it into another lip balm container.

Kool Aid and coconut lip balm

This method produces a completely edible Kool-Aid and coconut oil based lip balm. It can also be used as a not-so-shiny lip gloss.

  1. Pour a packet of Kool-Aid into a little bowl. Some good flavors/colors to try are strawberry, pink lemonade, tropical punch, cherry.
    • You can mix flavors if you would like to create your own color.
  2. Add a little water to form a paste. You will probably need to add a little more later but this amount is so that you can see the color.
    • If you want, add in a different color so it is closer to the color you want to achieve.
  3. Add a some sugar (optional). The Kool-Aid itself will be very sour so it does taste better if you add a little sugar. Roughly 1 or 2 spoons should be enough.
  4. Put more water in to create a loose paste. Try to crush all of the sugar and Kool-Aid. If you miss a little that's okay, but if you miss a lot of the sugar grains, the final product will look grainy on your lips.
  5. Add 2 to 3 spoonfuls of coconut oil to the colored paste.
  6. Place the paste and oil into the microwave. Microwave it for a few seconds to melt it. Remove from the oven.
  7. Pour the resulting mixture into the container you're using to keep the balm in.
    • Use a container that has been thoroughly cleaned and sterilized beforehand.
  8. Mix for a few minutes to try and combine the ingredients as smoothly as possible. The oil and Kool-Aid paste don't blend very well, so it takes lots of stirring. Watch some TV or listen to a podcast while doing this.
  9. Put the container of balm solution in the fridge. Let it chill for 2 minutes. This will help the coconut oil re-solidify so that it won't be a liquid.
  10. Repeat the mixing and chilling process until the balm is mostly hardened. That will probably require about three rounds of mixing and chilling, but it depends on how much your stirring it and how cold the fridge is.
  11. Allow to set. Once it is thickened, just leave it in the fridge for 30 minutes to set completely.
  12. Finished.

Tips

  • This type of balm is good to sell or give away to friends.

  • If you don't have Kool-Aid, you can use Mio Water Enhancer.

Warnings
