Make Curtains from Bed Sheets
Flat bed sheets provide an ample amount of fabric. If you have a whole bunch of sets lying around, why not do something with them? To make curtains from bed sheets, it takes minimal sewing, too!
Steps
- Understand the measurements. Gathered curtains are usually 1.5 to 2.0 times wider than a window. Most windows require two twin sheets. Twin sheets are 66" x 96". Full sheets are 66" x 102". Queen sheets are 90" x 102". King sheets are 108" x 102".
- Gather your sheets and sewing supplies.
- Using a seam ripper, open "just" the side seams of the hem at the top of each sheet. Most hems are about 4 inches wide.
- Measure the width of your curtain rod. Add width plus a 1/4 inch for movement within a rod pocket.
- Make a rod pocket. Make a straight horizontal stitch above the hemline of the sheet, accommodating for the width of the curtain rod. The remaining fabric at the top of the sheet will become the ruffle.
- Iron the sheets.
- Slide the rods into the pockets and hang your curtains.
Tips
- Make tiebacks with contrasting, recycled fabric.
- A tension rod can be used between walls to create a division within a room.
